After the OS loads, I am presented with a console login. I can't start KDM manually either using the startx command. I see errors in the vars log (don't remember the full path and file name) regarding my Microsoft wireless mouse and a message that says something "quit". I tried updating packages with the -f switch. Next, I will try a wired mouse and maybe keyboard.

Made a few more passes w/apt-get install, autoremove, and update. Also had to boot in restore mode. It took a while, but the packages were finally fixed. I still couldn't get the display manager to work using startx. This time it was the "no screens" error. A reboot fixed that. It took two days, but now I'm good. My previous upgrades have never been this difficult. I must have really messed up my previous OS and didn't know it.
