Upgrade to precise with Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT causes xorg crash

    Hi all,

I have just finished upgrading from Oneiric to Precise in my 64-bit pc with nvidia GeForce 9500 GT. Running several graphical applications like xfog causes the x server to crash and restart. I don't know why.

My running kernel is 3.2.0-24-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP,
and the nvidia drivers are version 295.40.
Also, the xorg version is 1.11.3.

Below is the output of /var/log/Xorg.1.log during and after the crash occurs (when starting xfig)

    Code:
    Backtrace:

I would really appreciate some help in understanding what's going wrong. Thanks.

    http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...Nvidia-Drivers

There are problems with Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu.
I use freshly installed Gentoo Linux and I have no problems with nvidia-drivers-295.40 and KDE 4.8.1 with my Nvidia 9600GT

Solution is to download Nvidia 295.33 drivers and apply security patch to it as said in following forum:

        Thanks for the input guys.

@couchbotato & praveenthivari: Are you sure the problem is with nvidia's proprietary drivers? Just as a test, I uninstalled the proprietary drivers and went with the FOSS nouveau drivers. Same problem. Running xfig crashed xorg. I even switched from KDE to LXDE and the same problem occurred.

Not sure at all mate, and now it definitely sounds like Xorg or xfig bug.
Had to google what that xfig is, somekind of drawing / designing program apparently, and quite old too..
Is xfig only program that causes trouble? What version are you using?

I can try it out with my Gentoo KDE 4.8.1 box I just installed, if it crashes the xorg with me too.

Edit: Ok installed it now and it is running fine with my box. I dont have any files to open with it but it loaded up in ~0.1 seconds and is working.

          Code:
          >>> media-gfx/xfig-3.2.5b-r1 merged.

          x11-base/xorg-server
                Latest version available: 1.11.2-r2
                Latest version installed: 1.11.2-r2

            Not exactly sure.
Have poor understanding of underlying processes. But I had problem related to NVIDIA. My desktop used to load fine with noveau but on installing latest NVIDIA drivers from repo it used to crash the graphical system(KDM, Lightdm). So search for problem related drivers on google and found out that they were problematic. So tried to follow the given solution in Nvidia forums and it solved.

May be you could give it a try.

I'll see about rolling back to the earlier version of NVIDIA drivers

@couchbotato: xfig is not the only software causing this crash. Mathematica crashes too.

Perhaps it has something to do with window boundaries.
