    Endless KDM login loop...

    Hi all,

Well, the error that have had all along from beta1, beta2 and now in the release version seems to be consistently present. I guess it is a mistake from me not to have notified it before, however, I was hoping that it would magically disappear... I guess the magic has gone...

In any case, logging in simply brings me back to the login screen after a few seconds. Killing KDM from the commandline and then starting X from the commandline presents me with a normal session, so I presume I have not a graphics card problem...

A fresh installation proceeded without error and the 32 bit desktop live version worked without a problem prior to installation.

    Configuration:

Asus eeePC 1000 (one of the first models that worked pretty well with previous versions of Kubuntu):

    No swap space was created

    Intel Atom N270
    2GB RAM
Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller

    /var/log/kdm.log says:

klauncher(####) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(####)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): No time zone information obtained from ktimezoned
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /tmp/############/.config/ibus/bus

    ##### represent simply the normal numbering...

Searching provided me with only very old similar problems for which the proposed solutions did not work, e.g. deleting .kde

I must admit that I have an additional problem where the sound it only sent to the dummy device, while it worked perfectly well from the live session, but I shall address this in a separate thread once this one can be resolved.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

bumping because I have the same problem. Different system... lenovo w520

I have a similar message in my kdm.log file. Don't know if it's related, but I also cannot change my date/time

I suspect your problem lies elsewhere. My KDM log consistently shows nearly the same set of "errors" on both my laptops, yet KDM runs fine. The only difference is that I don't have the Ibus error, but that's because I remove Ibus from my machines.

Can we take a look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

Ok, I was lazy and should have shared my solution a long time ago!!! Mea culpa! Please do not send me to /dev/null...

There is another thread here about someone who could also not login from kdm. Admittedly, his problems were different, but I followed the thread hoping that a solution might come along. Well, it didn't, because either they were not relevant or they were things that I have tried prior to posting my request for help here. However, there was one thing mentioned, which I thought about trying, but never did and that was to create another user account, which is completely new and try logging in from that account in kdm. Well, this worked! So this meant that the problem was really in my home directory, which was strange, because before I tried to log into my proper account the first time I move .kde to .kde_old and I checked that all files belonged to me (have the same group and owner ID's). So, I was completely surprised to find that there was still a problem. Now some more information which I notice I did not give in my first post and this was that although it was a clean install, I must admit that the previous OS on this PC was a derivative of Ubuntu (I chose it at the time, simply because it supported eeePC's better than Ubuntu itself and Kubuntu was not yet ready for netbooks. OK, this meant that my home directory was not quite kocher, but I certainly did not expect such a problem.

My solution was finally a brute force approach by which I backed up my data, wiped home (actually formatted it, I said I am lazy!!!) and recreated the user account, copied my files back and logged in first time with no problems. Once this worked, I had sound, was able to configure my settings the way I wanted them and had no more error messages or problems.

So, jwebster8, before trying anything, just try to create a totally new user account with a name that does not yet exist on your PC and see whether you can log in from that account in kdm. If you can then you probably also have some incompatible files in your home directory. They may be different from me, but the result would be the same. I suspect once this is resolved you also be able to change the date/time...

        l8r

PS. I hesitate to change the subject of this thread to [SOLVED] until jwebster8 is also satisfied...

I've been traveling a lot and haven't been able to respond.

as per fermier's suggestion, I created a new user and was able to log in via kdm. So it does indicate that there is a settings file that is not playing well.

I've tried the trick of moving .kde to .OLDkde and that didn't work.

Is there a good way of finding out what is causing the conflict?

also, Steve Riley wanted to know what was in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, so...

...okay, I got impatient and started messing around.

A brute force solution that's not quite brute force as formatting your drive is to:

            a) create a directory called something like OLDdotFiles
            b) move all the . files in your home directory to OLDdotFiles
            c) reboot
            d) if you desire, slowly start moving files from OLDdotFiles back into your home directory. Do it slowly and log off and back on to make sure the file you moved isn't the one messing things up.

basically worked for me, but there's probably a more efficient way of finding the aggravating settings file.

            Cheers

Ok, jwebster8 you have far more energy and patience than I. Probably the reboot step was not quite necessary in your procedure....

Next time I have a big laborious job, I shall keep you in mind. With your confirmation that you have solved your problem, I now move to change the subject to solved.

no, that was before I moved all the dot files

fermier...you're right, the reboot was probably not necessary. But I don't know how to get back to a kdm login once I've done a console login. I was too tired/lazy to look it up

                    Alt+ctrl+F7 (or sometimes F8 ). Alt+ctrl+F1-6 to get back to a console.

                    If that fails then
                    Code:
                    sudo restart kdm
                    should work.

Also, I think that if you chose the console login via kdm if you log out of the console (ctrl+d or type logout) it should bring you back to kdm, though I am not sure on this one.

Is there any difference in the Xorg.0.log that gets generated when you can successfully log in with the new user?

You know...it used to be that the kind of problem you describe was easy to diagnose by looking that the Xorg log and the .xsession-errors file. But lately, when I've asked folks to post these files, I'm not seeing anything that jumps out as an obvious problem. Hrm...
