internet connect lost randomly but regularly

I have been using Kubuntu 12.04 on my Lenovo laptop for a few years and recently came across this problem. My internet connection seems to drop unexpectedly but on a regular basis i.e. at least once every 2 days. I know that this is not an ISP problem because I have a VOIP phone on the same line and that connection never goes down. Also, it seems that ssh connections are not affected. The only way to get the connection back is to reset the computer.
I regularly download all the Kubuntu upgrades in hope that it will solve the problem, but no such luck.
Can anyone give me direction as to how to find the solution to this problem?
What log files or settings should I be looking at?

Does it drop when you're actively using the computer, or do you notice it only after you've been away from the computer for a little while?
