    Computer doesn't recognize wired connection

I recently bought a Toshiba LX-835 all-in-one computer, which I set up to dual-boot into Kububtu 12.04 and Windoze. In Kubuntu it only recognizes a wireless connection, even though I plugged in the network cable I used on my last computer. When I open Manage Networks the Wired tab is grayed-out. Is there some way to get the computer to recognize that a wired connection is available? I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a wired connection for security.

Have you gone into K Menu > System > Additional Drivers and checked to see if your wired network connection has/uses a proprietary driver that needs to be installed?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
