I had exactly this problem at the start of 12.04 although my wireless is the intel IPW2200.

The problem appears to be that the kernel support for the intel card wpa capabilities was dropped/omitted, and network manager was not updated to replace that support. Apparently OOTB Wext support was not provided.

To find out whether that is the case remove search for network-manager installed packages within Muon and remove all those that are clearly connectivity based. Don't worry, if it doesn't work you can easily reverse it. Also search installed packages commencing with the term libnm. At the same time install WICD, which is an alternative connection manager.

Reboot then reconfigure your card using the new manager. Does that work?

Great stuff. Please bear in mind, however, that WICD currently has less functionality than the network manager. For instance if you use use a VPN I don't think WICD can do that yet, so we might need to figure out how best to get the network manager working for you. If you just want the basic connectivity then WICD ought to be just fine for you.

There's no need right now to use VPN and I'm with the basic functions. Although I'd like to know which disadvantages the wicd else has.
