I don't usually have network-manager or any associated GUI widgets for it installed (because I already know ifup, ifdown, ifconfig for basic command line use, and I really don't need network-manager on this machine -- all it has is a wired connection to my router).
When I log into KDE and it's restoring a saved session rather than starting 'fresh', restored as well as newly started KDE applications don't seem to, er, 'have the Internet'. Kopete says "Online" but doesn't show any contacts, KMail takes forever to 'prepare' for mail retrieval, and Dolphin won't connect to FTP sites. But Skype or Chromium work fine.
When I give up and install network-manager, everything's hunky dory. So I don't know if this is a bug... maybe KDE isn't even meant to work fine without network-manager any more these days.
PS... eep. This should probably have gone into the Network Support subforum?
