How do I transfer videos from Canon MVX100i

    Greetings,

I need to transfer a video from my Canon MVX100i. I plugged the USB cable to the Canon and to my computer but nothing happens.

    Thanks,

    Michel

Does the computer detect it? Canon says you can transfer images using Windows Messenger, but nothing else on the subject. Does it have a Firewire port?

No The computer does not see it. Canon has Windows software but nothing for Linux. It has a USB exit and a "DV" one probably a firewire but my laptop does not. Are there any applications that would help detecting a video cam corder?

      Thanks,

      Michel

Yes, DV port is another name for Firewire aka ieee1394.

If your computer does not detect the USB connection and you don't have firewire, there's no magical way to connect it. Likely, even if the USB connection worked, you wouldn't get video through it - I know I can't with mine.

You either have to get a computer with firewire, get a firewire card (if your laptop has a slot) or buy an external converting device. Do a web search...

          Will do.

My MAC has one, so I have to get a cable that would connect to Both the MAC and the camcorder. So if I understand you correctly a firewire connection WOULD have showed me the camcorder under Kubuntu? No need for extra software?

          Thanks,

          Michel

Not exactly. There are programs available in the Kubuntu repos that work, but they're not installed by default. This isn't exactly an everyday task for most people. I use DVGRAB and KINO to move video from my camcorder to desktop. The cool thing is you control the camera from the PC - play, pause, etc. Worked pretty well for me. I just recorded the videos as-is to my computer and then edited them after.
