Scanner turns off on boot

I've got an old Mustek Scan Express A3 USB 11X17. I had it set up on an ancient PCLOS machine and it worked great there. I'm attempting to get it working on my new Kubuntu machine. The scanner lights up when Kubuntu shuts down, and turns off when Kubuntu boots up. When I try to run XSANE I get the error message "Failed to open device 'gt68xx:libuusb:004:002': invalid argument."

I've installed every SANE package that looks like it could be relevant, to no avail.

Any ideas?

The scanner is also working well with Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop.
