HDMI not setup properly in xorg

I am using an external HDMI 720P monitor (VIZIO TV) on my notebook and the windows are cut off! Checking Display monitors in settings shows a setting og 1280 x 720 for HDMI. Changing to 640x480 still shows only part of the windows! It looks like its showing in 1080p instead of 720p. How do i fix this? I have the xorg edges PPA as I need it for my Intel GMA 45. I just tried sudo apt-get update && sudo dist-update with no change to video after reboot.
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

You may want to search for your TV make and model to see if anyone has come up with a particular xorg setting for your TV. many TV's do not properly deliver their EDID information, or do so in a way that xorg can't understand automagically. My last TV, a Vizio 32 inch (720p, NOT 1080), needed some manual fiddling. It was 1366x768, which is a 'odd" resolution.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution got me there, I think, but getting a true 1366x768 was difficult, it kept wanting to be 1368. I cannot remember how I solved it, but I did after much googling. no longer have a TV or the pc that had the xorg config file, or actually the xrandr settings I used to enable the correct resolution at login as described in the wiki page, which was more reliable than using an xorg.conf.

are you booting with the TV's HDMI plugged in to the computer? , if so dont ,try starting the computer first log in then plug the TV in ,,,,a configuration box should come up and ask if you want to set it up , do it or if it dosent pop up then go to system settings>display and monitor and set it up.

@ hear on a vizio tv I use 1920x1080 for size (37" 1080p vizio) and position as right of (as the TV is right of the laptop , when I use the HP 23" flat screen monitor I use above as it's sitting right above the laptop) then click apply and it will take affect.

if I leave the tv pluged into the computer when I boot it the tv will get set to "clone of" and dose not diplay as well , however I don't get cut off windows aether ...............

720p TV's have a funky resolution that is sometimes finicky to set up in Linux, and the lack of good EDID montior information sent from the TV down the HDMI to the GPU only hampers things. I'll bet if the set was 1080p there would be no problem at all.

I tried booting into Winblow$ Vista Home Premium and it did the same! I'll try rebooting with it unplugged then plug it in. You'd think Micro$oft at least would want to fix this. Maybe they think most people use 1080p or 1080i or better.

Hey Ubuntu Developers, How bout you fix this?

I tried rebooting then plugging in HDMI... Not automatic. I had to manually set it up. It didn't actually turn it on! It says its on but the tv says no signal!

After About 2-3 minutes it finally came up at 1280 x 720. TV= VIZIO model VX32L Manufactured in April 2007.

Just to make sure its understood, The resolution is setting to 1280 x 720 but, the GPU appears to think the view port is larger Horizontally and verticaly than the resolution! Part of the top, sides and bottom of the windows is getting cut off! If i try this in Winblow$ Vista, i get the exact same results: 1280 x 720 with a larger than screen size viewport!

                Check your TV's documentation - I'll bet it's native resolution is 1366x768 .

I don't have any documentation for the TV. I checked at vizio.com and could not find documentation.

Check the link I put in post #8, it is to your tv, and there is a link to the manual, it is definitely 1366x768. You will likely have to manually generate the modelines and create a simple script as described in the ubuntu wiki page I linked to, though you may have to google for 1366x768 and xorg, maybe even vizio. I cannot find what where and how I got my Vizio 32 inch tv (different model) to work, and it is entirely likely that the graphics card can make it frustrating getting it to output 1366 - I think one of my gpu's , an Nvidia of some sort, did not like 1366 using any driver, tough using the built in amd ati 3200HD was able to do so (again I think) using the free drivers an d adding the correct info as described here

                    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Res...s_in_.xprofile

It took me a while to figure it out, but once set it worked solidly without adjustment for 2+ Kubuntu versions- all upgrades. But man I sure did loose hair over it

you will have to follow some of my links and do some manual configurations and possibly experiment a little.
