Monitor eMachines E233Hbd stuck on 1280x1024

When I got my "new" eMachines E233Hbd monitor a few years ago I remember having this same problem with kubuntu 10. However I don't remember how it was solved.

Now I'm trying to get the same monitor to work with kubuntu 12.04. The problem is that it won't do a higher resolution than 1280x1024. That's rather low and looks like the aspect ratio is off too. I think it should be 1920 x 1080.

    Can anyone help?

I usually get that problem if I am using the open drivers instead of the vNidia drivers. All my machines use nVidia video cards.

What video card do you have in your machine?

Did you enable the use of proprietary video drivers? Menu | System | Additional Drivers

Oh wow! Thank you! That worked.

Last time I was having to create my own xorg.conf file and everything. This just magically worked!

Yeah, don't ya just love it when that happens?

Canonical puts a lot of work into their distros, and they are getting easier and easier to use.

Well this "worked" in that now the resolution is fixed. However it has made my computer crash randomly. After disabling the drivers, I seem to have a stable system again, but of coruse the monitor resolution gets stuck at the wrong setting again.

          What can I do now?

            See http://www.perpetualpc.net/srtd_resolution.html

            It's 'dated', but still applicable.

xrandr doesn't list the correct resolution and nothing better than 1280x1024

Do you have a 12.04 LiveCD? If you do, what resolution do you get with the monitor?

The LiveCD (the one from which I installed) also is stuck at the 1280x1024.

BTW the other live cds of other distros I've tried also have the same problem.
