Dual Monitor Configuration Problems

I am trying to use my monitor(DVI) while simultaneously streaming live video to my 42 Inch Plasma(HDMI-Not DVI->HDMI). I have set the HDMI out to be "right of" my DVI connection, and I can load the stream up in Opera, and move it over to the right and it appears on the TV. I was also able to set up a separate but functional KDE panel on my HDTV screen. So the basics are functioning fine. However, I am encountering a few small problems:
1. Notifications - I made a thread last night regarding my notifications had changed appearance and location(see here). Well I have not applied sumski's suggestion yet, but I am receiving the "new style" notifications on the monitor, but the "old style notifications on my HDTV. I only want the notifications to appear on my monitor.

2. Full Screen Issues - for the sake of organization I have the stream opened in Opera, and moved Opera to the HDTV. I hit the full screen button on the flash video player controls. However, it only switches to full screen on the monitor, not the HDTV.

3. Sound - Like I said, this is HDMI out on the GPU to HDMI on the TV, but I can not get the audio to carry over to the TV speakers rather then PC speakers.

4. Sidebar/Panel - I had previously configured a panel to be on the right side of my screen like a side bar with several widgets laid on top of the panel. Visibility is set to "Always Visible" but none of my programs seem to respect the boundary of the panel's width. Anytime I maximize a window, it acts like the panel is not even there.

I might be able to help with #3. I have a similar setup and had massive sound problems at first. From System Settings, go to Multimedia and then Phonon to check your backend. VLC backend works best for me. If you dont already have it installed, you need to install the package phonon-backend-vlc.

Is it possible to set the tv to simply mirror one desktop screen? To elaborate just for the sake of clarity, as it is, my TV functions as an independent screen. I have to actually, Look at the TV to see where my mouse cursor is. Instead, if it were to mirror a specific desktop screen(not necessarily the active screen) it would be easier to control.

Nice timing, I was literally just adding on to my post. I will look into the vlc backend. I should have mentioned that I have checked system settings and checked sound is enabled and the hdmi out is recognized as a sound device.

Do you have a Nvidia GPU? If so, you can go to Nvidia X Server Settings and set Position to "Clones."

I am not sure what I can offer with out specific requests. I can grab some screen shots of some of my display settings. The TV it self worked like plug and play. Everything I have tweaked is in the system settings options.

One thing driving me nuts atm, I can now click full screen for the stream playing through Opera on the TV. However, when I click anything on my monitors screen, the TV is no longer full screen.

Maybe of little help but on this nVidia machine I can set Opera to full screen (F11) on one monitor and do other things on the other monitor without affecting Opera.

Thanks for the tip. It was not quite that simple. In this case, I had to click pop out on the flash players controls, maximize the pop out player, and then choose full screen!

3. Sound - I am still unsuccessful in getting sound over HDMI using the VLC or phonon backends.

4. Sidebar/Panel - I fixed this issue by choosing to set HDMI to "left of DVI-0"

Still curious if I can mirror only "Desktop 2" to the HDMI while keeping Desktop 1 as a monitor only Desktop? It would be easier to control the applications on the TV if I could see it represented right in front of me.

Are you using the open source driver, or Catalyst (fglrx)?

Reason I ask is that I'm sure I read somewhere that HDMI audio support is only available with the proprietary driver.

I can't speak to that as it's been a while since I last used a Radeon graphics card. However, the catalyst drivers may not be an option for you, as I believe they dropped support for anything older than the 5xxx series GPUs.

HDMI Audio is disabled by default, but can be enabled(beta at this point), As I understand it I simply need to add "radeon.audio=1" to grub then "sudo update-grub." Is this correct?

For what it's worth, the instructions I posted, work on Justin.tv. The only small nuisance is the the flash controls will not go away. Well that and the stream is in 4:3 not 16:9, but atleast I managed to achieve 99% full screen with a flash video.

Thanks for the link. I was shocked at how much performance difference the proprietary drivers offer.

I am slightly confused though on the difference between the catalyst drivers and fglrx(sp?) Drivers. If I click additional drivers in the system or utilities menu, it offers to install the fglxr drivers. Should I use those or catalyst?

Another thing driving me nuts, when I have the HDMI out enabled with DVI, newly launched apps are showing in the icon task bar on the monitor, but launch on my HDTV. Can I correct this? If I recall correctly there is a setting about this in Display options, but even when I set Monitor 1(DVI) as primary, it still likes to launch things on Monitor 2(HDTV). Not sure if it is broken or I am doing something wrong.
