JUST to make sure your system is up to date and their are no broken packages before some one starts trying to help with the current problem run this in a terminal.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
if you get any errors post them .

      Thanks for your reply Vinny!
I did the above and no errors were generated at all. But still I get the same screen as in
my OP, when I try to set up the printer.
      Any other advise?
BTW, I have saved the long list generated by the above command and can post it if that help.

ok ....you did type y and hit enter and let it install the long list of packages it listed when you ran the command didn’t you ?

now is this printer already on the network and working with other computers at home ?

and whats the make and model of the printer ?

and what ver. of KDE are you on and was this a new install or an upgrade from a prevues ver. ?(well assume it's Kubuntu-12.04 sense that’s where you posted )

This appears to be a bug that comes and goes, and there's no single solution, alas:

          https://startpage.com/do/search?quer...specified+type

A workaround is to point your browser to http://printer:631/ and configure your printer using its built-in interface, if your printer offers this. printer is the hostname or IP address of your printer.

Actually, it was not a list of upgardable packages, but rather list of checked repos which either were hit of ignored for
update part of command. And with 0 upgradable as the last line of the upgrade part of the command. Bottum line, there were no upgradable packages and system was up to date.

Yes it Ok and functions well.

and whats the make and model of the printer ?
It is an HP LaserJet 6L printer which is set up properly on my desk top and as said above functions well.

            VINNY
Yes. It is Kubuntu-KDE 12.04 and is a clean install. The same is on the desktop where printer is connected.
            Thanks!

              Hi Steve:
Reading thru some of the bug reports caused me a relief knowing that my system most likely is OK. Thanks for that!
Also, pointing the browser to localhost:631 works and allows to install printers. You rescued me again!
Now, I am wondering why the the install of kubuntu-12.04 on my desk top with exactly the same applications and everthing else similar, works fine as far as system settings>printer configuration goes?
P.S. Now, I am thinking, could that be because desktop system is an upgrade of kubuntu 10.04?
              Thanks!

ok what @SteveRiley sead is good and I would suggest you look for .....in your package manager (muon, apper, synaptic whatever you use) and install hplip and hplip-gui and whatever recommends they pose .

hplip-gui will give you a nice little config in the system tray like this ......................................

                and the Device Manager

                  Thanks Vinny!
I checked in muon. hplip is already installed. However, when I select hplip-gui, it indicates that 17 other packages will be changed as well. I became somewhat apprehensive and did not proceed. The reason is because localhost:631 is now working and allows printers management.
Thanks again for your time and guidance!

I have already signed off from laptop. I will post the outcome of the command from laptop tomorrow eveining when back from work. But I suspect that one would be the same as this. We shall see.

ya all 17 of those are ok it's installing the recommended as well and one is xsane which recommends gimp it uses gimp for adjusting the scanned images yes it's some gtk stuff but as I see it if it works ....so what.

befor I installed the hplip-gui my printer (HP-Deskjet-3052A)was setup and would print (wireless) but would not scan with the default scan utility after I installed it (and every thing else hp I saw in synaptic that looked relevant)all the scan utility's started working

                            VINNY

                            try it like this now
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get -s install --no-install-recommends hplip-gui
