    laptop constant heating

    Hi all

    I have the following problem:
I have a laptop Acer 7551G (AMD Phenom X4 with ATI-AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5650) with Kubuntu 12.04 fresh install.

When Kubuntu boots fan starts working slowly and little by little starting to spin faster till max. Doesn't matter if I am working on something or just sitting on plain desktop wallpaper.

    cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor says ONDEMAND
cat /proc/cpuinfo says that all the CPUs are working at 800MHz (when in plain desktop)
    cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method says PROFILE
    cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile says MID

I am putting the card in LOW power profile or make it use DYNPM power method but no effect.

    Any Ideas

PS: I am using open source driver, cause fglrx driver freezes the laptop at random (at least in Kubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10), not tested in 12.04.

Is this a new laptop, or you have it for some time? Perhaps it requires a little bit of cleaning of the inside. Mine did.

It is half and an year old and it has warranty yet so I can not open it. But it is working that way since the beginning.

Probably opensource ati driver is culprit. It has really really bad power management at the moment.

Low profile should help, but even low profile is much worse in terms of heating than fglrx power management. So maybe you should try fglrx again.

BTW there is a very nice widget for ati opensource power management: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...content=139738
