    Which nvidia drivers?

    In the additional drivers utility it gives me a choice;

NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (version current-updates) or
NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]

I am not really sure what the difference is. Does the 'post release updates' one install new drivers as they become available whereas the 'version current' stick with the release ones? In which case why are the 'version current' recommended?

    thanks

I have tried both and neither work. My desktop comes up but locks up. Perhaps others are experiencing a similar problem.

My suggestion is to try the recommended one first. Maybe someone else can clarify what the difference between the 2 are.

It looks like they are the same version at the moment. A lot of people are having trouble with 295.40. I'm not, but I don't use desktop effects.

      gazelle:~$ apt-cache policy nvidia-current*
      nvidia-current:
      Installed: 295.40-0ubuntu1
      Candidate: 295.40-0ubuntu1
      Version table:
      *** 295.40-0ubuntu1 0

      100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
      nvidia-current-updates:
      Installed: (none)
      Candidate: 295.40-0ubuntu1
      Version table:

Thanks for the replies. This seems to answer my question. http://askubuntu.com/questions/66548...nt-updates-pac

I will try current-updates if they ever finish downloading I have never known the servers to get this slow on a release.

Thanks ronw! Your method helped me figure out what version nvidia-current-updates is at today (304.43 for 12.04.1). I was curious because when I was installing the steam beta on my desktop today it stated it needed at least the 304.22 verison of the nvidia proprietary driver.

Do I simply select the current-updates option in jockey to upgrade my drivers or ... ?
          Nowadays I'm mostly Mac, but...

Yes, I would try Jockey / Additional Drivers first. If it works, that takes care of some additional fiddly details.

Worked like a charm. I used jockey to select the current-updates, it downloaded and installed without issue. After a reboot I am now running the 304.43 version of nvidia's proprietary drivers and steam now runs correctly. Super easy!
