Closing Applications leave empty window in panel

    Hello,

Whenever I close an application, there most likely will remain an empty window in the panel. A blank space.
It stays until I unlock and lock again the plasma widgets.

It's kinda annoying. Is it a known bug and if so, is there a workaround?

    Thanks.

Only thing I can suggest is to try to reset plasma to its default settings (or try a new user first to see if it will help) by renaming or moving ~/.kde/share/config/plasm* (files the begin with plasm) and restarting plasma by pressing alt+f2 and entering:
    Code:
    killall plasma-desktop && sleep 1 && plasma-desktop

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Please could you be a little more specific :

When you close the application is it a white space remaining, as opposed to say the outer frame of it?

If so, it sounds to me like it's graphics-related. What graphics card do you have? If you have an nvidia card have you enabled the proprietary nvidia driver or are you using the open source nouveau one?

Also have you tried turning off desktop effects (k menu/system settings/desktop effects/general)?

        Hello

It's a fresh install, so resetting plasma shouldn't help at all...

It doesn't happen every time, but it's like an invisible window in the panel.
Imagine a firefox you close, it should disappear out of the panel so other apps can move to that "place".
It disappears, but makes no room for other apps.

I'm using the open source ati driver.
I will give it a try and turn off desktop effects.

If the problem does remain I will try the proprietary ati driver.

        Thanks you two.

I can confirm this. Happens to me often as well. Sometimes if you close a window, the space that was reserved for the application in the task manager remains although the icon for the application is gone. Next time it happens, Ill screen shot it.

What version of kde are you using? If not 4.8 then upgrading might help as well.

That doesn't tell me much... kubuntu doesn't upgrade to the latest version on kde automatically after kubuntu is released, you have to add extra ppas to do so. So depending on what version of kubuntu you have and what ppas you have install the "latest version" can vary wildly... you can find out the actual version by launching any kde application > help > about kde or by running "kde4-config --version"

Can you confirm it happen with a newly created user?

Its been happening to me since I can remember, and the OP says his install is new. This weekend, Ill make a new user account and play around with it.

I can confirm this, using the latest NVIDIA-current driver, so it's not the video. It's been happening since kde-4.7; this is currently kde-4.8.2 on precise, but it happens on whatever is current on oneiric as well. I have not found a reliable and repeatable way to make this happen. I notice it most often with gtk applications, but on occasion also with konsole. I am using the plasma-icon task manager, so it is happening with that as well as with the default task manager. Never was able to track it down.
