Sooo folks behind the curtain..is Kubu Precise going to "work"?
but googleearth-package doesn't show any dependencies on either gtk or qt.
I'd guess the googleearth binary is statically linked (basically meaning the executable includes the parts of qt it needs), so it doesn't depend on a qt installation (like dynamically linked apps do).
Google earth and Skype need a lot of 32-bit stuff what is not necessarily present on an otherwise clean 64-bit install.
That's what I thought, but the 64bit version of Skype (deb) brought in 215 extra packages, including ia32 stuff! GoogleEarth only brought in 211 extra packages.

Nice thread, I was looking for a thread like this. It looks like 12.04 will be a good one. But it looks like I will stick to my 2 weeks after release rule before doing a fresh install. I will be using it a long time as I normally skip the release after a LTS because they tend to be buggier than normal.
The extra packages for the 32bit libraries are well worth it if you use 32bit stuff like Wine. I am hoping Diablo 3 will work well with wine as we no longer run windows in any form in my house.
Well, the main reason that I started the thread was to get comments on things and that I was having a particular problem with Precise when I have never had problems with any of the other testing candidates back to Natty.
And this one is about as plain vanilla as one can get, an AMD 64 dual core 4200 with Nvidia 6600 card, the only two distros which I have found that won't run or install, are:
DSL
Kubuntu Precise.
Plain Ubu Precise installs and runs and updates.
I mean Kubu has always run on this machine and is doing so today, but Precise and Muon just have problems for me at least. Others seem to do fine with it.
I can try with the i386 or the AMD64 and both "will install".
Muon just messes up over and over.
So, yesterday, since I had a lot of papers to grade I spent many hours installing first the i386 and the AMD.
In both cases, the wireless would not work, it would not even "see" anything. I entered the correct numbers for manual setup and still nothing. This is the same problem that I reported before. It is just a plain vanilla Atheros card, no big deal, the driver is fine etc. works with all other distros.
So, I strung a 40 foot CAT5 cable to the computer and both installs got on the net jiffy quick with the wired hookup.
With both, I did apt-get update and in both cases it updated some stuff and then just stalled.
With both I tried MUON and in both cases, it stalled at 33 percent.
I WATCHED the network monitor this time and the data came arrived in "bursts" with about a minute and a half or so in between the bursts. Every three, or so, bursts gave an incremental increase in the percentage of update.
It DID occur to me that maybe Kubu Precise update is being swamped with new installs updating, but...well, this is the same problem that I have had for several weeks now.
After approximately........ 11 HOURS....of trying to update using the cable, not the wireless, Muon stalled and said that some packages would not download.
I could not close MUON, had to go to processes.
After restart.
a) At login I immediately got: "Unable to open consolekit, permission to setuid not correct".
After several attempts the password finally took
b) I immediately got a report that nvidia was not working and the network did not work at all.
I got: Network Manager not working.
Wireless was not accessible and the wired would not allow sitting it.
After that, in both cases, the whole OS started to "collapse".
This is the same behaviour I reported earlier.
It is not the "internet" per se, because I have been able to install and run a variety of OSs this last few weeks from Bodhi to Knoppix and all of them install, update, you name it just fine. This on both hard drives and on usb sticks.
So.... again, this is a pretty plain vanilla machine. I use it because I can get just about ANYthing to run on it, and I'm just sayin' that there is the possibility that others may be posting that they have problems with the final release on this particular setup.
Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with Precise on your rig. I'm going to suggest that your problems are all with your Nvidia 6600 video card during installation. Have you tried installing (or running the LiveCD) in 'safe graphics' mode? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bo...iguration_Line
If everything works in this mode, to include your wireless, the proprietary video driver can be installed and activated afterwards.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Hmmmmmm ok....
I had not thought of that because the 6600 card has never been a problem before.
Come to think of it... this machine does not have an on-board video... so I've always just installed with whatever card is in there at the time, Sometimes a 5500 sometimes an 8600. I traded the 9600 off because it didn't provide "that" much of an increase in performance...so.. ok, but again... the 6600 is an older card, it "should" be no problem at all nowadays, it is in the HCL and I've used it for....years... hmm ok.

It could be the luck of the draw for your system/card combo, depending on which driver you need/use(Nvidia or the open Nouveau?) and how well it works with the xorg that is in Precise at any given moment.
As to Muon crapping out, that is a classic case of why my recommendation is to use apt-get to manage updating in pre-releases. You can substitute Adept and KPackageKit, etc for Muon in past versions.
I use apt-get dist-upgrade every time. BUT.... I don't necessarily hit 'y' every time. If it seems to wanna remove too much stuff I hit n and either wait a day or two or do an apt-get upgrade instead (the safe one) . I've been running precise since two weeks into development and have not had a single issue this way. At this point in the game you should be safe with the dist-upgrade. My systems (3 of em on precise) are all rock solid right now.
I always tend to use apt-get update from the terminal when doing updating, just an old habit.
I like to just see what is new, being removed or installed as it goes.
So one drive has my perfect Kubuntu installation on and a few spare drives are slotted in and out to let me play with other installs.
So I can test the beta versions on MY PC and not in a virtual environment.
So any updates I do will only every "break" a spare while my main install sits safely on a shelf!
I've done a clean install of Beta2 with the intention of using just Muon to do the updates.
I've update Muon to most current 1.3.1 to be fair.
The first message I get is
"Not all packages could be marked for upgrade. The available upgrades may require new packages to be installed or removed. Do you want to mark upgrades that may require the installation or removal of additional packages?"
So I select "Mark Upgrades" But when I click "install updates" I get the following error
"Another application seems to be using the package system at this time. You must close all other package managers before you will be able to install or remove any packages."

Recent incarnations of Muon have a 'Full update' button, it'll give you a clear and colour coded overview of changes to be done.
I find it clearer than the Konsole output of apt-get dist-upgrade.
Is this using Muon software centre, Muon package manager or muon update manager?
