    Disappearing packages

    I have a curious problem since I installed KGpg on Pangolin beta. KGpg does not work correctly but that is neither here nor there.

    KGpg was installed using the Muon package manager. That was the only thing that was installed.

    Today I found that all three Muon packages, the Muon Software Center, Package manager and Updater had completely disappeared from the system. Absolutely no trace.
    Worse is that this happened without any request for action from the watchdog - policy kit.

    Ever heard of this before? This seems to me to be particularly serious since it overrides one of the mainstays of Linux, that you are in control of what gets installed - and conversely removed.

    Post a copy of your /var/log/apt/history.log on Pastebin and reply with the URL. Let's take a look at what's happened with your package manager.

        Looking at this myself I would think that the older version of muon - muon-installer:i386 (1.3.0-0ubuntu1), muon:i386 (1.3.0-0ubuntu1) - was removed during an unattended upgrade but was not replaced with the new version muon-installer:i386 (1.3.1-0ubuntu1)

          I have seen this kind of thing before when performing upgrades close to a release date. I'd recommend disabling all forms of automatic and unattended upgrades when working with pre-release versions of *buntu. Perform only manual updates/upgrades, and always simulate with apt-get -s before doing the deed.

            I hear what you are saying but the problem is that it is disabled; at least I think it is
            Check for updates daily
            Only notify about available updates

            But again you are right in future I will check the log to see what has actually been done. I learned many moons ago that you have to do that with windows registry and I keep a full log of what changes are wrought there.
            Had hoped that it would not be necessary with Linux.

              Personally, the only executable portion of Muon that I install is the package muon. I've removed muon-updater, muon-notifier, and muon-installer.
