I believe I have left the swamp....

About a week ago my Precise installation seemed to be coming apart at the seams.

First, there were niggly little problems here and there, but no patterns and nothing reproducible. Then the -19 kernel upgraded to -20. That's when things went to pot, so to speak, and my DE was behaving like Win95 and on its way to WinME.

The rtl8188ce wireless chip, driven by the rtl8192ce driver, was slow and often went dormant and unresponsive, and even though KNetwork manager never indicated a broken connection, and the bandwidth was flat lined at 0 KiB/s. To get it active again I often disconnected and reconnected my wifi manually. And, during a video, or just when you clicked a link, Chromium would appear to freeze for up to a minute or so before it would resume sending packets back and forth. Sometimes "Snap!" would appear with no indication and several reloads would be necessary to see content.

Flashplayer would crash a lot, something it never did on me before. I had little hope of seeing a video to its conclusion without seeing "Snap!".

Minecraft was fast when started up but slowed down and eventually crashed. A BSOD appeared once when the temp hit 140F.

Chromium stopped loading reliably when the quick launcher icon was used.

KMail would frequently crash on its own during loading, and often when I deleted a msg.

I got an error msg from the HD ... bad sectors.

Apport crashed reporting crashes, and both Muon and apt-get had failures.

And when just about anything was run this laptop temp rose to 140F.

On 3/11/12 I purchased a 4GB stick to top out my memory at 8GB. It passed the memory test twice, so I never suspected it. Around noon I ran the memory test again and the stick of RAM I had added had failed! I pulled it out and suddenly everything but the wifi returned to rock solid normal. The temp idles at around 100F. Minecraft is fast and solid. KMail is good.

But, Chromium was still lagging, stalling and throwing Snaps even though KNM didn't indicate any problems. I set swec=1 but that didn't help. I ran lshw and noticed that it reported my chip as an rtl8188ce, not an rtl8192ce. Thinking it would make a difference if I ran the "right" driver I went to the Realteck website looking for it. On the web site it was labeled as rtl8188ce for linux and kernels upto 3.2.x, but when I untarred it I found it was the latest rtl8192ce driver. But, I cd'd into its directory and ran "make install" as root. It compiled and installed the rtl8192ce driver. I rebooted.

That was 3 1/2 hours ago. I have not had a single hang with Chromium, nor has it lagged.

All is well in the garden now.

        UPDATE:
I did some googling and discovered a fix (temporary?) for the Chromium-browser seg fault problem. It is here . It seems that this problem has been with Chromium for several months, and in all distros and on Windows as well.

The solution uses nscd , which is a
        Description

Nscd is a daemon that provides a cache for the most common name service requests. The default configuration file,
/etc/nscd.conf, determines the behavior of the cache daemon. See nscd.conf(5).Nscd provides caching for accesses of the passwd(5), group(5), andhosts(5) databases through standard libc interfaces, such asgetpwnam(3), getpwuid(3), getgrnam(3), getgrgid(3),gethostbyname(3), and others.
There are two caches for each database: a positive one for items found, and a negative one for items not found. Each cache has a separate TTL (time-to-live) period for its data. Note that the shadow file is specifically not cached. getspnam(3) calls remain uncached as a result.
I renamed the installed /etc/nscd.conf as nscd.conf.old and used the modified version given in the fix posting.

Now, all is well in the Chromium-browser, too!

Glad to know that you have resolved your problem. With the latest kernel I was very pleased that it recognized a TP-Link USB wireless adapter (TL-WN82 1N) that I have had lying about collecting dust.

I started using Chromium after experiencing a number of problems with Firefox. With the new releases and the positive reviews I decided to return to Firefox. I n the past I had been using the same .mozilla directory for a number of years and decided to save my bookmarks, rename the old .mozilla directory and start again and import my bookmarks. I had to go through and setup all my passwords again. Now all the previous problems I had with Firefox are no more and I am very happy with it.

I am wondering if you have been able to now get applications such as Google Earth working on your system?

I am fairly confident that both GoogleEarth and Skype would run on my system BUT they want to install an additional 215+ applications, mostly a lot of ia32 stuff and additional GTK+ libraries on my 64bit installation. That is something I do not want to do. I do not want to run apps that require the ia32 libraries and am gradually removing applications dependent on the GTK+ library and moving toward and all Qt based DE.

Ever since the upgrade to KDE 4.8.1 (or maybe 4.8.1a? -- can't remember), I've been seeing the same problem. Frequent KMail crashes, especially when deleting messages.

OK, that is just nonsensical. Installing a caching daemon sounds like a way to mask a more fundamental underlying problem.

Now that I have replaced my bad 4GB memory stick with a good one, and altered my wifi router to use 11g, my Precise has settled down and is acceptably stable. So far, after 8 hours of use, KMail crashed only once, the first time I opened it. I've deleted dozens of emails during the course of opening and closing it several times without a crash. Nothing else has crashed or misbehaved. My network connection is fast and stable as a rock.

I agree. But, I don't have to open Konsole and type in "chromium-browser" to start it. It starts from the quick launch tool without problems. When I get reports that they've fixed the problem I'll remove the kludge fix.

Hm. Maybe it's time to recreate all my Akonadi resources -- on both laptops, since both are exhibiting the problem.

My Kmail has been reliable and stable in 12.04. Currently running KDE 4.8.1.

That scenario doesn't bother my installation BUT... there are occasional emails in my box that cause a crash when I click the delete button. I can restart KMail and try to delete them and they crash again .... rinse and repeat. What does get rid of them is to drag them to the trash folder. They get deleted when KMail closes.

After today's update my rtl8192ce connection is cranky again. Since my wifi is already set to despense only 11g traffic the problem this time cannot be 11n. The icmp request contains the packet number sequence. Gaps in the sequence indicate periods when Chromium and the ping hang, sometimes for several seconds, yet the packet times are generally 60 ms or so. And, during those periods, the packet information is often missing the IP name and only has the IP address.

When I upgraded to the 3.2.0-21 kernel it brought along its own rtl8192ce driver, but that rtl driver ran all day yesterday without a single hang.
Now, it hangs more often than it runs. I am going to recompile the rtl driver and see if that changes anything. I will also see if my new 4GB memory stick is still good.

UPDATE: the previous post was made from bed, four walls and 60' away from the wireless router. I got up, made the bed, and moved my laptop to my recliner in my living room, where I usually surf, and the pausing and hanging diminished and even stopped. Back in the bedroom the signal strength was 60%. Here it is 80% (I still have four neighbors whose wifi's are giving me 100%, but not mine, which is only three meters away. )
