GoogleEarth install still NO JOY in Precise

I wanted to install GoogleEarth so I went out to its website and downloaded its 64bit Debian version.
When I began to install it, it said there was an older version in the software channel. The version I just downloaded and was attempting to install said it had to add 224 packages. I counted the first 100 and noticed that I wasn't anywhere close to being half way down the right hand slider.

I went to the "software channel" (repository) and after installing the googleearth-package from the repository I ran "make-googleearth-package" and
received ia32 error messages which broke the package and prevented the install:

    jerry@jerry-Aspire-7739:~$ make-googleearth-package

libfreeimage3 wants to remove googleearth and install libraw5, what ever that is.
lsb-core wants to add alien and a bunch of rpm files.
ia32-libs-gtk is not in the repository.

So, GoogleEarth on Precise is still a no-go.

I downloaded the 64bit Deb from the same site and installed via double-click.

After downloading the dependencies, the installer prompted a restart to allow the install to finish.

On restart the installer failed to pick up where it had left off, likely due to 'Start with an empty session' being enabled. Double clicking the Deb finished the install without error.

I noted just over 300 packages were required to be installed.

Googling the terrible fonts in G.E and found a fix here.
Instructions to apply the fix as follows,

      Code:
      cd ~/Downloads
      7z x replacement.7z
      cd replacement
      sudo cp -r * /opt/google/earth/free/
      Joy!

I made a decision a few weeks ago that from Precise onward, I will not use anything that requires ia32-libs-multiarch. I find it rather difficult to believe, in 2012, that an application can't be written to compile against 64-bit libraries.

I've made the same decision in minimizing my use og GTK+ based apps as well.

I wish I had that luxury. As part of my work I need to be able to build the 32-bit version of our products on my 64-bit Linux machine, which requires the installation of some i386 libraries if not the entire ia32-libs package. Our source control software, which IMO sucks, requires a few 32-bit X11 libraries too. Ugh!

I'm so glad I have been able to return to Kmail with Precise. Evolution sure stunk a big time.

I am sticking with Chrome for now, though.

Have you tried using VMWare or VirtualBox to install a 32 bit Kubuntu and then doing your development under it, leaving your 64bit host free of ia32 libraries?

I've been a devoted FireFox fan, and still am, but yesterday I decided to give Chromium a through checking out. FAST it is! Extensions it has in abundance! If I could find a way to link it to Kmail so that an option would appear that would allow me to send a link via email without having to open Kmail and cut & paste the URL and subject line, I'd switch. I didn't see a way to do that in the configure tool, and I browsed the extensions/addons for hours (so many!!) without finding one. Anyone know of any?

Yes, that's definitely an option. I have LVM installed so I can use that to install 32-bit Linux on my Kubuntu box. I will still need some 32-bit libraries in order to run our source control system, but that would be a lot more manageable than having to install the entire ia32-libs. Thanks for the suggestion!

The only thing about LVM is that it doesn't allow the guest OS to use the 3D capabilities of the underlying hardware, which VMware usually allows via WDDM drivers. I've been told that I can try SPICE, but I haven't gotten round to it yet. Does VMware have a version that runs on Linux?

Yes. I used to use it before I switched to VirtualBox.

However, SteveRiley, one of our admins, says the latest version for Linux integrates so nicely that apps in the guest can be run as if they are native to the host. There's a thread about the topic. Search will locate it.

                            Hi GreyGeek...

Very strange, I never had any problem installing Google Earth on my copy of Ubuntu 10.04 x64 nor did I have to install the sheer number of dependencies that you listed (none, in fact!) However, I didn't try to install it from .deb, though. I installed Medibuntu and it was included as part of its software offerings, which I retrieved through Synaptic.

Perhaps you already have the ia32 libs installed. What's the output of
                              Code:
                              dpkg --list | grep ia32
