kubuntu became noisy again last days...

I am working on a Compaq 6720s laptop. I have a dual-boot installation: Ubuntu 12.04 beta and Kubuntu 12.04 beta. Both were running silently last weeks. I hardly hear the fan. That is great!
But since a day or two Kubuntu got noisy again.
At startup the fan really starts to blow then it gets less but it won't go away really. Ubuntu is very quiet.

    Does someone share this experience?

    No such problems here.

Is your CPU busy? top or htop would reveal this, and also which process is causing it.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

According to the system monitor the cpu is not to busy. I have kubuntu-low-fat-settings installed.
I added "noacpi" to /etc/default/grub and it made a huge difference. The system is much quieter now.
      This is intreging because
      - a week ago there was no need to do this and
      - with Ubuntu (12.04) I stil don't need to do so

At this moment I notice something that is VERY relevant: when I boot FROM THE UBUNTU PARTITION and start Kubuntu, the system stays absolutely quiet. When I reinstall grub on the Kubuntu partition, do a "sudo update-grub" and boot from that partition the system is noisy.
The noise has nothing to do with Kubuntu only with the boot process.
I hope someone will benefit from my experience.

Is grub configured the same way on both partitions?

I only made the waiting time shorter in Kubuntu. The rest is generated by the systems. Here are the grub.cfg files of both Ubuntu and Kubuntu
            Ubuntu http://members.ziggo.nl/enouwens/per...en/ubugrub.cfg and
            Kubuntu http://members.ziggo.nl/enouwens/per...n/kubugrub.cfg
Kubuntu is on /dev/sda5 and Ubuntu on /dev/sda6
I compared the two with KDiff3. There are some differences but I don't know if they are relevant.

Nothing jumps out in your grub configurations. You say that they both were running silently and now Kubuntu is noisy again. Were they both silent right after the install or did you have to oad a module or change a setting?

I don't know about Compaq, but for instance the old Acer Apire One notebooks had to have a module loaded to keep the fan from running full speed (loud). I'm wondering if there is an additional setting that is different between the two installs.

Another question. If I understand correctly, if you boot from the Ubuntu partition into either Ubuntu or Kubuntu, the fan is quiet. If you boot from the Kubuntu partition into Kubuntu, it is loud. What about if you boot into Ubuntu from the Kubuntu partition? Is it still loud?

If I boot into Ubuntu from the Kubuntu partition it is silent. Perhaps the bios is buggy or so. I can wait what the final release brings. I am working from Ubuntu now. I like my laptop when it is silent.
B.t.w. I can't tell exactly when Kubuntu got noisy again. It is possible that KDE 4.8.1 brought back the noise. But it can also be that I switched to the Kubuntu partiton for booting at the same time.
I have no strange settings on both Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I run Kubuntu in a light way. I have Kubuntu-low-fat-settings installed and Akonadi and Strigi off.
