Hi Folks,
as a new user to Kubuntu I thought I'd drop a few lines here to let you know my experiences with a new Kubuntu install.
I have come from mageia (running on their Cauldron test release) after a crash with their software. I happened to have a Kubuntu 12.04 cut for another purpose so used it to try and recover the crashed system.
However, in the process of doing so I discovered that two of the things I'v been struggling with with mageia worked out of the box (namely bluetooth and multi touch), so I decided to kill the system totally ard rebuild it (took a while) with Kubuntu.
So.. my experience (please remember this was LATE at night ).
Initially I did an install from the already running live CD. This took AGES to get the packages, and got to 90% finished and hung. I rebooted, and nothing.. so.. I did a full install.
During this process I inadvertantly booted from the UEFI boot on the DVD and unknowingly did a UEFI install. Again taking ages to bownload the packages, but did go to completion. The system booted (when I worked out what was going on with the boot manager) but when I applied the updates (including a new kernel) it would then not boot (occassionally I managed to get the original kernel to boot, but after a couple of tried, nothing but a blue screen).
Now VERY late at night, I started another install, using the normal boot, and let it complete over the little of the night left. I'm now running that instal...
The biggest remaining issue I have is the insability of akonadi imap (exactly the same problem existed on mageia). If I keep restarting the server, and keep the configuration screen open so I can monitor if its dead or not, I can make it work, but that is not going to fly with most users. It keeps setting the resource offline which is VERY annoying.
I also get Activity manager crashing as soon as I boot (again something that happened with mageia fairly routinely).
Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it at the moment. I'll keep posting things that happen as I go along if they help.
Peter.
