Font preferences reset on every boot

As per the subject - I change SystemSettings>Application Appearance>Fonts to suit me (larger fonts for a start off). But every time I reboot, which is every morning the fonts are reset back to Ubuntu, size 9, which is much to small and spidery for me.

Also even with my usual font setup - Bitstrem Vera Sans, size 10, they don't look like 10 point to me. When I reboot to 11.10 which has the same font/Anti-Aliasing etc settings it looks much bigger and clearer.

Both installs using nvidia-current, dpi is 96

Thanks - setting the font preferences for root (kdesudo systemsettings) seems to have done the trick
