No Flash! :)

Purged all traces of Adobe Flash from my laptop this evening. Installed the latest build of Rekonq from the KDE Goodies PPA, which is actually at version 0.8.60 now. Successfully watched videos on YouTube and Vimeo with HTML5. Stability all around, no glitches, no crashes.

Holy crap, I am majorly impressed. Precise + KDE 4.7.97 + Qt 4.8 is really shaping up quite nicely. I think my wife might get jealous!

Soooo let me get this straight.

When I was able to watch a video on the Precise machine using Rekonq I was not using "flash" I was using "HTML5"?

If the above is correct would you care to expand on "HTML5" and "Youtube video" for ussins who don't know all that fancy stuff that you guys know?

If you haven't installed Flash, and you're using a web browser that understands how to parse HTML5's <video> tag, and you have the supported codecs installed, then any website that delivers HTML5-based video will operate correctly in your browser.

Supported codecs include Ogg Theora, H.264, and WebM/VP8. YouTube supports only the latter two.

To know whether you're using Flash or HTML5, right-click the video. If it's Flash, you'll see a context menu with Flash-specific items. If it's HTML5, you'll see a different context menu.

What I haven't yet investigated is which codec my Precise box is using to display the video in Rekonq. I've installed every gstreamer0.10 package in the repos, so I know I've got H.264. And because I've installed Chromium, I have WebM, too. I haven't yet investigated whether Rekonq was pulling down the H.264 stream or the WebM stream.
