    woodsmoke's observations Precise on AMD 64

    This is not in any particular order, but kind of in order of the install.

    AMD Sempron 3000 1 processor, 1800 hx, 1 gig RAM Nvidia Geforce 8600 onboard sound. LiteOn dvd player read rw etc.

    ++++++++++++++++++

    THERE IS AN IMPORTANT ITEM ABOUT the NEW way that Google is providing it's calendar which may be bad or good, if you get tired of reading my stuff just search for calendar it is way down toward the bottom.

    +++++++++++++++++++

    It installed rather meekly with the normal installer.
    It tried to setup wireless, but could not, that may have been my mistake in clicking something, it provided the correct devices for both wired and wireless, atheros.
    Up on removal of the dvd and clicking to restart, it closed the dvd tray.
    Upon startup there was the notification sound,

    +++++++++++
    BUT, it did not provide the notification sound after the restart after installing updates or on two other test restarts.
    +++++++++++

    Checking screensavers, to see if the new Ocean screensaver was there! it offered to install the stock screensavers.

    I'm going to try using nothing but Rekonq, since I have all my schools stuff done for the first of semester,

    +++++++++++
    BUT.... Rekonq offered to install flash, but then an error box appeared in which it said that another version of "synaptic" was running and exited. I tried this three times with restarts and not perceiving that any package manager was running.

    THE FIX was to run dpkg-a, it dis a LOT of depackaging and then provided the installer and everything was ok
    ++++++++++++

    Amarok offered to setup Amazon store and wanted me to "provide a country", I chose U.S. since that is where I live, but I wonder if it will limit my choices compared to say, Europe.

    After a restart a "tty" shell login black screen appears for just a few seconds. This may or may not be a "thing" for absolutely new users who may want to hurriedly try to enter a password etc.

    The plasma widget desktop folder appeared on first boot and has not appeared on second and other boots.

    There is a new "login manager", which is nice, it had me with "British" I changed to U.S.

    The update manager provided both restricted sources and packages! :?

    Indexing by Strigi started automagically and there is now a new, seperate, "e-mail indexing" module.

    I installed Caligra and it went smoothly, however, it does not provide a "blank document". I created a "new" document, which had a bunch of "lines" on it like an old tablet. It produced, however a "blank document". This is probably a design choice for Caligra, however, there is no easy way for a "new user" to turn it into a "template" and then be able to SAVE it to templates. A template thus saves in documents and one has to search for it. I am not aware of how to do it, which is no big deal, but then, neither would a new user. This should maybe addressed by the dev team for Caligra.

    I typed this on Caligra, the interface has been "streamlined" in that the icons are smaller and finer.

    New panels have been added such as "review", "references" once an insert table of contensts, footnote, citations, bibliography and there is a configure where one can add scripts.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    AMAROK stuff.
    Amarok offered to download codecs when I tried to play a music stream, "Coolstreams", but didn't do it.

    Fix was to install restricted extras and then it did play the stream. The wikipedia plugin did then work for information about "streaming music".

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    Akonadi stuff. also Kontact to do work with akonadi calendar

    Well, Kontact keeps going "back and forth".

    After the normal fiddling with Akonadi and Kontact I got e-mail to work both in and out going with google mail.

    The Akonadi resource was not there for the calendar. I had to install Akonadi-KDE-resource google data for the Akonadi to provide an IMAP calendar.

    However, after much fiddling it did not work.

    However, contacts, after the akonadi resource was enabled, DID work.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

    NOTE ABOUT GOOGLE CALENDAR

    Google calendar no longer provides a "calendar view"!!!

    It is a "database view". One gets a list of things that are happening in a week, arranged top to bottom and can go forward or backward. All of the information is there.

    To enter a new item one types:...."School starts tomorrow 8am"

    and....."School starts 8AM" appears in the list on the correct day.

    THIS MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS for Akonadi coordination with google calendar or it may be good....I do not know.

    +++++++++++++++++++

    A "to do" now appears in the "to do list" box. It coordinates with the Akonadi google resource calendar AND it appears in the aknoadi google resource calendar.

    Contacts work, they are imported immediately when the Akonadi contacts resource is added.

    The rss feeds work.

    Popup notes work.

    Journal works.

    +++++++++++++++++

    HOWEVER................the front end for all of Kontact does NOT display any of the stuff like todos, or a new e-mail.

    +++++++++++++++++

    When one first goes into settings personal information and tries to do Akonad, there is a big transluscent screen that appears with something like this:

    "Akonadi personal information service is not running this application cannot be used without it".

    There is a nice blue Akonadi symbol and one has to click start to get at things, but it does work.

    KOPETE stuff.

    Kopete with Oneric would not allow one to send a message to somebody that was offline. It will now allow that.

    Kopete does not need your full Yahoo name like "woodsmokeatyahoo.com"

    It now merely needs "woodsmoke" and the password.

    ++++++

    MENUS SYTEM: it still wants one to use the mouse to click the previous part of the tree instead of just going back.

    There have been posts about this at the forum, it maybe ought to be looked at.

    ++++++++++

    System bell and system notifications do not produce sounds, I could not find any particular place to change this except in system settings and it did not help.

    System sounds for stuff like Kopete when one posts a message in chat do not sound, and again, I couldn't figure out where or how to fix that, but the basic Kopete functions are there.

    +++++++++++++++

    Kopete web cam works.

    +++++++++++++++

    Upon placing a DVD in the tray Dolphin offered Dragon player to play it, and when clicked the Dragon player appeared, but would not play the DVD.

    I tried to install libdvdcss but it is not in the repos there are other libdvd stuff which I installed and also xine but then when inserted the dvd would not pop Dolphin, so...dont know about that.

    +++++++++++++

    NOTE: A dvd of data, including mpeg and .flv videos is not automounted(this may be because I installed xine) but K3B does see the dvd.

    K3B offered to add mp3 capabilities when it saw the dvd, so parts of the system do see the dvd.

    I don't, particularly, know where to enable dvd automount, there is a command, but don't remember it.

    ++++++++++++

    Rekonq does play a youtube video, GGs "broke" video!

    ++++++++++++++++++=

    I installed Mplayer, and noticed that it has libraries for Blue-Ray.

    APPARENTLY that brought something with it that allowed Dolphin to automount the DVD, which is now seen in Dolphin.

    However, Dolphin only offered DragonPlayer to play it. That could be fixed in file associations.

    Mplayer was NOT AUTOMATICALLY added to the menu under multimedia and mplayer would not run from usr/bin.

    Kaffine reported and error: "Error reading NAV packet".

    Installed Kplayer it did nothing except see the file structure of the DVD.

    Kmplayer the KDE front end for mplayer did not help.

    Movie player did not work, although it tried. It wanted a restart.

    ++++++++++++++++++

    After restart tried all the players none worked.

    ++++++++++++++++++

    HOWEVER Note: a dvd of "stuff" is not seen by Dolphin, Dolphin still thinks that the movie DVD is in the tray.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++=

    A USB stick is immediately recognized and videos, mp3s mpegs, flvs etc will play in at least one of the players.

    Right clicking on the usb stick gave me the dialog for automounting of removable media, but that still did not automount the dvd just folders.

    If a dvd with a "file", such as a document, was put in the tray it would mount.

    I've seen behaviour kind of like this before so, I would assume that it is because it is beta.

    This post has been waaayyyy to long ...

    So...I'll quit for now.

    Re: woodsmoke's observations Precise on AMD 64

    After a shower, I feel MUCHO BETTERO!

    So....falling back to the terminal, since it is not in the Precise repos:

    sudo apt-get install libdvdread4

    showed that libdvdread4 was, indeed, installed, from the manual install through Muon.

    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

    Installed the libdvdcss

    So the results:

    the following would not play the dvd at all, probably because, for some they are not designed to play a dvd.

    Miro
    Bangarang

    The following played either from the files within the folder and/or "stuttery".

    Kmplayer
    movie player

    The following played the dvd as one one would expect.

    gxine
    kaffein

    So..... again, this is alpha stuff but, for those who have not done alpha before, get a hard drive and install on it in case something goes kaphlooy and the above might be of help.

      Remember all the goofy stuff we used to have to do with iCal and whatnot? It appears on first glance that Akonadi Google Calendar Resource works. When I created a calendar with this, it populated immediately. But I'm not seeing any further synchronization of events. Google tasks didn't become To-Dos, either.

      See my reply to your other note about general Google calendar display and entry questions.

        Hi
        The calendar is not working for me right now.

        ADDITION:

        There is NO time tracker in the Precise Kontact suite.

          Rekonq has lost the slider bar and also the "arrows", basically it is non-functional.

          Calligra words is "jittery" in the frame of the wordprocessor. In other words, the "white document sheet" now "jitters" massively, it slows down some, to maybe 3/4 of the original speed, over about 4 minutes but never really stops "jittering". It is not possible to write in the document. It did not do that yesterday when I printed several sheets.

          Calligra tables: When I copy and paste a section of an .xls file (the attendance download from the college) and then format the cells and select print range, it includes the two columns to the right that are not in the formatted print range.

          The "jittery" in words....MAY...notice MAY have something to do with Strigi indexing but Strigi seems to be idle.

            Return to the prior method of using Google's instructions for CalDAV on Sunbird, as modified by Kubicle and myself.

            You still have to press [Esc] to bypass the CalDAV's initial "tell me your credentials" dialog. Also: if you're configuring secondary Google calendars, note that the domain after long_string_of_characters is now import.calendar.google.com. I can report that additions/deletions in either KOrganizer or Google's web interface properly reflect in the other. Alas, tasks don't synchronize (still).

            Oh, and after you add a Google calendar to KOrganizer, you have to File | Quit and then re-open KOrganizer to get the calendar to show up in the list. Then you need to place a check mark in the box next to the name to get the events to appear.

                yes

                I'm speaking about the default install.

                I have time tracker on the Kontact suite in Oneric, there was a big long thread on it here at the forum.

                It is not on the Kontact suite in Precise, as far as I can see.

                  Ah. I rarely run default installs anymore. And I don't use Kontact. But that screenshot is from my Acer running Precise, so at least we know that KTimetracker is in the repos and is up-to-date.

                  steve@steve-aspire:~$ apt-cache policy ktimetracker
                  ktimetracker:

                    Ok
                    Something rather curious.

                    I have run SuperOS for several years until I transitioned to Kubuntu.

                    I "keep SuperOS up to date" because it is my "backup" OS, it always works, no matter what, but I like the Kubu interface better for the work I do.

                    So, I just updated SuperOS and...Kontact is completely function in it.

                    Where "Kubuntu", of late has had fits with Akonadi; Super OS updated Akonadi and it stillThat is retrieves Google mail and calendar as it did before, and to do list works, etc.

                    This is not the upgraded version to Unity it is still Gnome3 which I have tweaked with KDE stuff and Compiz and is long term support until 2013. It did a "partial upgrade" which left the whole system intact and fully functional.

                      Correction to above post.

                      Either I was wrong or not observant.

                      Kontact is not now checking mail at the gmail account and is not synching the calendar.

                      Again, I don't know particularly whether I was mistaken or what.
