    Precise and DigiKam

    http://osdir.com/ml/digikam-users/2011-12/msg00187.html
The official digikam 2.1.1 packages that comes with (k)ubuntu 11.10 have disabled the feature in Digikam to import images from devices that use gphoto2, like your Canon camera does.
DigiKam 2.4.1 in Precise senses my Kodak DC7630 and automatically lists it as a source to import pictures from, but when I click on the camera to import them nothing happens. So, the problem persists with at least my Kodak camera. Sad, because this camera has worked flawlessly with DigiKam for years.

GG check the settings in the camera and see if you somehow set the software mode back to kodec software. long story short my brother has a similar camera, and if you accidentally hit the share button it will reset that software mode to kodec only and it will cease to function as a "normal" usb camera. also when in this mode it would see it but allow no action or just completely time out when trying.

My "share" button doesn't have a "kodec" setting, just some options to mark certain or all photos with a print option and the number of copies. The setup option on the menu button doesn't either.

          Fascinating.
My old Canon S3is quit working with Digikam at about 11.10 (still bad in Prissy Pangolin) but my newer Kodak A1250 works fine.

Dolphin sees the Kodak in /media but does not find the Canon.

I installed shotwell which finds both cameras. Rats, Shotwell is not as kool as Digikam.

I miss my old 35mm SLR. The only electronics in it was the light meter. And I didn't have to put on my glasses to see how to use it.

It may not be a problem with DigiKam. I installed some other programs, like Gtkam, and the Camera plugin for GIMP, but all of them fail. I'll wait to see how the updates go. Could be a kernel problem or even upstart.

DigiKam is making improvements. After today's (1/13/12) updates it now sees, indexes and displays pictures in the ~/Pictures folder. But, it still will NOT connect to my camera.

However, GtKam DOES now connect to my camera and show the images on it without crashing. It also lets me select ALL of them and import them to my Pictures folder. It will NOT let me select just one and import it.

Same issue as with 11.10. It seems that the devs have "Better" things to do these days...

I use gtkam to get pics off my camera and then use Digikam to organize my pics . Works like a charm.

There was a ppa somewhere with a version of Digikam that fixed the issue, but I was not comfortable just using any ppa, so I use gtkam.

                Hope this helps!

                  Re: Precise and DigiKam

I've bypassed GtKam by taking the SD card out of my camera and plugging it into my laptop. I use Dolphin to drag and drop the pics into the Pictures sub directory, then reindex with DigiKam.
