Haven't run into a reason to downgrade yet (which doesn't mean that a reason doesn't exist :P).

So for "experimental" packages they seem rather solid.

The qt 4.8 packages are currently building for precise main repos, so barring any build issues you'll get them as regular upgrades fairly soon.

After I upgraded this evening, all system notification sounds ceased working. Other audio was fine -- just the sounds quit. Turns out the various .notifyrc files that point to sounds were missing their paths...eh? Weird.

I fixed it with a single command, which I documented in a how-to.

The underlying cause is not that the files were missing the paths (those haven't been changed), but that the sounds do not work without the explicit paths anymore in qt 4.8 (didn't notice it since I don't use notification sounds). It seems to be a deliberate change, but it does create some backward incompatibility, so I'd say it qualifies as a bug.

There is a bug report about it here:
                https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-22382
For more links you can check this arch thread (looks like arch linux already has a fix implemented)

Your workaround to set the paths manually will work, of course.

No bug. QUrl::toLocalFile is working as intended.

@Thiago: It is a bug, because you changed public API incompatibly compared to 4.7, and you are breaking huge portions of KDE SC with this change. Just search for toLocalFile in KDE SVN and KDE git, it's used in plenty of places, and AFAICT many of them can be, or are always, relative paths.
Yeah, I'd agree it's a bug, too. "As intended" = "break stuff" doesn't sound like anything else
