Finally a font for KDE: yup, it's called Oxygen

‘Oxygen Font’ is a project to design a desktop/gui font for integrated use with the KDE desktop. The design is based on interpolations between ‘Muli’ and ‘FontOne’ that have been further shaped to reach a clear, legible font to use within the KDE gui.

The basic concept for ‘Oxygen Font’ was to design a clear, legible, sans serif, that would be rendered with Freetype on Linux-based devices. The idea was to not quite follow a ‘purist’ line of sans serif typeface formulae, but to allow some juxtapositioning of font forms to give familiarity but also a sense of newness. A version of the font is also under development that is aimed to be a branding typeface for the desktop.

    Kubuntu devel irclogs: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2011/12/22...ntu-devel.html
ScottK So, I guess next release we get to decide between Canonical's Ubuntu font or KDE's Oxygen font. Fun. http://code.newtypography.co.uk/?p=1906 18:36
maco i like the descenders, but the y is really unbalanced 18:42
    ...
Riddell ScottK: hmm, without testing the oxygen one I suspect the ubuntu one will be higher quality and more distinctive 18:46
    ...
ScottK Riddell: Perhaps. In line with the Kubuntu general values, I'd think we should use the upstream one unless it turns out the Ubuntu one is significantly better. We'll see. 18:48
Riddell ScottK: yes but I suspect on most issues the ubuntu one will be better. I've an open mind on it but the Ubuntu one has had a lot of time spent on it and I don't see how the Oxygen one could compete 18:50
ScottK I'm happy to wait and see the result. 18:51
    u2san Riddell, yofel ok.. 18:52
Riddell I wonder if they realise how hard work it is to make a good font. maybe they do 18:52
ScottK He didn't make any announcements about when it would be released, so maybe he does. 18:52

      Intriguing SR.

The discussion about the "quality" of the font rather left out the idea of "newness".

As you probably know, but others may not, the making a font, is not, as the poster stated, "that easy". The old C-64 had a font editor and a really good one for the GEOS system for the C-64. Literally it was filling in jillions of pixels and figuring out just precisely where one could have a pixel or not that might interfere with a letter next to the one under consideration.

An example is 1ll or Ill.

There is a reason that "arial" was considered to be the font of choice in HTML. However, the situation has been ameliorated by high end graphics cards.

If the font looks "jaggy" at large sizes then "newness" would, perforce, go out the door.

A side note about fonts. The original Microshaft "Truetype" fonts were actually first generated by a fellow that was an Amiga user. He was somewhere in the MidWest U.S. and was, apparently, disabled, or something, but had a LOT of time on his hands so he spent it making "fonts" for the Amiga which were "scalable" as opposed to having each and every size for each and every letter in a package. He was doing a very brisk business selling the fonts through the mail to Amiga users when MS offered to actually buy the fonts with cash monies instead of just taking them.

But, I personally like the appearance of the Oxygen font.

I suspect these guys know what they're doing...did you check their waterfall illustrations? Oxygen looks very nice.

I concur, looks good on the screenshots (especially as it's not "release ready" yet).

Not sure if I'd use it as a desktop font (I'm rather conservative with font preferences), but I'd certainly take it over the ubuntu font.

Anyway, more free fonts are always welcome.
