I believe that if you stick with the Daily Builds, and don't activate the testing repository, Precise will be using KDE Software Compilation 4.7.3.

Currently testing 4.8 using neon on 11.10 - but its not the same as native Kubuntu builds.

That's what I've been told - Pre-released updates is for packages in 'testing'.

Project Neon has a PPA. I haven't tried it yet, though, so I don't know how well it works.

Yeah, as I mentioned, already testing via the neon PPA on 11.10, but they're not as well integrated - or packaged as official Kubuntu packages.

I've been running kubuntu 12.04 pre-release on a test desktop and my netbook. It's been stable - boringly so in fact. I was hoping for some kde 4.8 excitement. but they seem to be playing it safe with the same old kde-4.7. So is there no way to experience kubuntu with kde 4.8 unless I download the tarballs and build the whole friggin mess myself?

Edit - I see someone has posted that we might expect availability of kde 4.8 preview for testing next week? That would be tidy.

Final will probably have KDE 4.8.2 (depending on how the release dates match up)...but 4.8 for sure.

I think 4.8 beta2 should make the repos fairly soon (barring any build/other issues that might delay that). so the next kubuntu alpha/beta should have it.

4.8 should be heading to Precise relatively soon, 4.7.4 for Oneiric hopefully will follow 4.7.3 into Pre-release updates for eventual inclusion as a normal (no ppa required) update. I am sure there will be 4.8 for Oneiric in the kubuntu-backports PPA (not the normal backports repo - the 'unsupported updates" one)

in precise, there is no so-called 'pre-relese testing" repo, or rather nothing is usually in it until closer to release, or after release. It is all pre-release testing

neon is more bleeding edge than even the ppa's as they usually have daily builds of what is in currently in development. And all the glories and pitfalls that can bring - but it does not touch your current KDE setup.
