Dolphin got re-named by using kde menu editor

Some time ago it seems I renamed Dolphin. Maybe there was a permissions issue. Somehow I ended up with Dophin-2. And even in system settings | default applications (below), as well as panel and kmenu, Dolphin is Dolphin-2...

Would it be safe to launch kmenuedit with root privileges to edit the name? But I'm not quite sure how to access the kmenu for my user profile.

Running applications as root under your account is NEVER safe nor wise.

It appears that you have either renamed or made a copy of Dolphin and your menu is linked to the copy.

If you use

locate bin/dolphin

you will see where it exists. It should be here:

/usr/bin/dolphin

If you have created a copy or renamed you'll see either

/usr/bin/dolphin

or

/usr/bin/dolphin-2

or

/usr/bin/dolphin
/usr/bin/dolphin-2

lf you see two lines check to make sure the sizes are the same and use

kdesudo dolphin

to delete the copy, and edit your local menu using kmenuedit as you (not root) and point it to /usr/bin/dolphin ... etc...

Hey, thanks. When I use the terminal to locate dolphin I get just the one instance and it's here: /usr/bin/dolphin". (I checked that earlier, but just by looking via Dolphin in /usr/bin/). My entry in the kmenu for Dolphin looks like this...

When I edit only the name field (I try to change it from Dolphin-2 to Dolphin) changes are ignored.

Check ~/.local/share/applications for dolphin .desktop files (this is were user edited menu items go...and they'll override system wide defaults).

What Kubical said. Or, just delete that entry and create a new item. If KMenuEdit won't allow you to delete that item then you have other problems. Perhaps a permission problem on the file that Kubicle mentioned.

Thanks you guys. I did go to ~/.local/share/applications and saw two for Dolphin. Strange though, I didn't see a Dolphin-2. Anyway, I deleted Dolphin-3 and then could see a restored "Dolphin" with no number appended to it. I deleted the Dolphin-2 from Kmenuedit. I can't be too specific but seems a while back is when I had the inability to edit a few entries in Kmenuedit. Probably I shouldn't do that, but I like setting up my KDE desktop just the way I want it. Also, not that I care, but there is this in settings | default applications...
