Oneiric 11.10 on AMD64 is almost as bad as Windows!

I have an AMD64 desktop and a laptop with Natty 11.04. At this point I will never install Oneiric on the laptop because it is such a POS. I never had trouble with Windoze like I have been having with Oneiric. I wish someone could explain to me why the devs trashed this so badly.
With Strigi, Nepomuk and Akonadi disabled, every so often I have to pause for the system to return anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. Why?
In the posting of this message I had to pause several times. In System Monitor I cannot find any process hogging the system.
At this point I am seriously considering returning to Natty Narwhal 11.04, just so I can recall what it is like NOT to be working in Windoze.
    Help? Suggestions?
    TIA!

Probably the problem is all about your video card/GPU. You'll have to share that stuff before anyone can help you.

Are your CPU temps normal? Does the CPUs show high percentages of use?
If so, install powertop to see what's happening.

Do you experience these "pauses" only when browsing this forum, or elsewhere? If the former, then what you're seeing is a bug in the forum software. That problem will go away when we switch to vBulletin.

Re: Oneiric 11.10 on AMD64 is almost as bad as Windows!

I have a GeForce 9800 GT video card with nVidia GPU. I am using the recommended restricted nVidia drivers. I am able to move the mouse freely while the program is frozen. Sometimes it happens when I click to open a program or file and the program sometimes times out while I am waiting.
The System Monitor does not show any activity at the time that is suspicious and for the most part it will be below 15% usage. I did use it to see what was happening system-wise while the freezes were occurring and did not see anything worth mentioning.
If I have Amarok playing(sometimes) the sound is uninterrupted. If I have a video playing, either in VLC or YouTube video in Firefox, then the video freezes while the sound continues unabated.
Usually I can 'grab' a window and move it around the screen while this is going on. But the program(s) remain frozen anywhere from 2-5 minutes.

            See what the logs say...

How about you add a new user and see if the problems occur with that user. It may be some left over config files are messing stuff up (multiarch maybe).

I've got an HP TouchSmart 310 with AMD64 that shows none of your problems.
But it runs an AMD Radeon video card.

Re: Oneiric 11.10 on AMD64 is almost as bad as Windows!

I used google to search "XKB: reuse xkmfile /var/lib/xkb/server-000C66138803377578189A43FC75F176DA7971D8.xkm" and found quite a bit, including:

                    http://pastebin.com/zpJqP1ZX

                    and

                    http://forum.xbmc.org/archive/index.php/t-92857.html

It looks like the nvidia proprietary driver is involved, and possibly the motherboard BIOS. Is your BIOS updated to the most recent version?

I did not find a crisp solution to the issue -- seems to be affecting a few people/hardware combinations.

Re: Oneiric 11.10 on AMD64 is almost as bad as Windows!

                      Hi all,
The things mentioned in the first post here are very recognizable for me. Almost everything mentioned I experienced also. Very frustrating because it's not trackable in SystemMonitor as said. Also it's not reproduceable cause it happens at random.
Also the idea “lets go back to Natty” came into my mind. Natty ran flawlessly on my system that is about 1 jr old now. (Graca with nVidia GT220 chip).
Not only I had “freezes” in the beginning when I installed Oneiric, I had a lot of crashes.
Especially when “rekonq” was active. But that evolved without any interference from my side (just did the updates), from the end of october until a few days ago, till “only” 2 or 3 freezes an hour. (10 to 30 sec. “only” here, mainly with rekonq) Then the system went on where it has stopped before...
Anyway, I understood that there has been many (also fundamentel) changes from Natty to Oneiric. Think our problems must be related to this. What I didd a couple of days ago was upgrade to the next KDE version. Still a “RC”, but from what I understood reasonable stable. (Next KDE=4.8, but because of RC = 4.7.97) You can get it at the Kubuntu PPA – /beta/. From then on no freezes any more here.
Further on, upgrading the nvidia-driver by the x-swat ppa may help.
                      Running with: Kub 11.10 ,kernel 3.0.0.14, nvidia-driver 290.10.

@TommyB I wonder how “you 've got” your Oneiric. Did you do a clean install or was it a live-upgrade? I got mine by a live-upgrade. I know that a lot of people will say: never do that!!... But I 'd like to experiment...
