I just switched from Unity. Now I'm using Kubuntu 11.10 64bit. It is a fresh install. The only thing I did was to install Firefox and Skype. However, after installing Skype, all Plasma effects are gone. The blue light around the window borders, the transparency, etc. Another thing is that dpkg got frozen when I installed the Kubuntu updates. It just hung at 52%, stuck forever. That happened TWICE. Because it froze the desktop completely. And I was forced to re-install. Now with the fresh install, it happened again. But this time, I was able to fix it via terminal. Problem though is that after the Skype install, the Plasma effects are missing. What do I have to do to fix it?

Re: Plasma effects missing after installing Skype
Finally, I fixed it. I found out that Skype install brakes some important files from Plasma, which means the installation process of Skype involves removing Plasma files. Perhaps because I run the 64-bit version of Kubuntu, whereas Skype is a 32-bit application. Nevertheless, this shouldn't happen. It's annoying.
Had to do the following:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --reinstall plasma-desktop
Then I had to restart and manually re-enable OpenGL and the desktop effects I wish to use.

Re: Plasma effects missing after installing Skype
Please report this bug to the Skype guys. Since this is not an ubuntu package, you cannot use the ubuntu-bug utility :/
Guys, don't just work around these things, please report the broken stuff so it has a chance to get fixed.
