I have a Win 7 VM and a Win XP Pro VM, and I have never run across this problem. I would suppose it's one of the many "mystery services" that run in Windows -- if your Win XP version is ancient, and never upgraded, maybe you never got that service installed? Just guessing.

Hmm, it's a WinXP with SP3 preinstalled, not too ancient and never had this problem before, using vmware with XP guest since 2005! But I suppose I must look to the vmware forums, although there answers have been sporadic... Thanks in any case!
