Can't shut down, update doesn't work properly

I've had two strange problems during the last couple of days:

    * I can't shut down or restart the computer via the shutdown menu (have to drop to command line)

    * there are 28 new packages that I can't install because I've supposedly failed authorization. I didn't though - that window never appeared. Never seen this problem before.

    Any thoughts? (it's 11.10, KDE 4.7.4)
The only thing I can think of is that I installed Razor QT a few days ago. Might that be the problem, and if so, how do I get rid of it?

I would try updating from the command line 1st to see if that works. If not, what does the output say?

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

Update and upgrade from command line works flawlessly.
