compiz not working in kubuntu 11.10

    Hi,

since yesterday I moved from k10.10 to k10.10 but compiz is not working,
first of all I found out that the emerald package is not in the repositories, but I got the
.deb packages from this link: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source...+build/2545504

after that I install all the needed compiz packages and when I run compiz
from the console I get the following error:

    Backend : kconfig4
    Integration : true
    Profile : default
    Adding plugins
    Initializing core options...done
    Segmentation fault

any idea what is wrong with compiz and k11.10? hardware acceleration is
    fine on my computer.

    Compiz version: 0.9.6
    Emerald version: 0.8.8

    thank for any help :-)

Pardon me for having a total "derp" moment here but why do you need compiz with KDE ? Kwin already does compositing and has a lot of the effects compiz has on Gnome.

To test, do a Ctrl+F9 and that should do an "expose" like effect on you desktop.

we don't need to start a discussion between kwin & compiz or gnome, that's the beauty of Linux.. you can choose!!!

I need back compiz on my computer if anyone can help me, very appreciate! :-)

I seem to recall something about Compiz not working on later versions of KDE.

Perhaps this might help for reference in getting it set up:

Just as silviucc I would like to know why you need Compiz? What effects do you "need" which are not in the Kwin list?

DeMus, no offence but I already answered that question and if you know compiz-fusion you will know there are many differences between kwin and compiz, specially in the way you trigger some rutines (combinations between the keyboard and the mouse).

but if you can help me to get compiz-fusion to work I'll very happy, if you don't have any idea thank you any way :-)

P.S for the forum: please don't ask me again the same question of "why....", if you can help me I'll be very happy, if not just let it :-)

Re: compiz not working in kubuntu 11.10

The last time I looked emerald was broken under the current version of compiz - that's what's causing your segfault.

emerald is no longer in the repos because it's no longer supported - but if all you want is to run an emerald theme you don't need compiz. I run an emerald theme under kwin using smaragd.

You can install emerald from 11.04 repos and smaragd from here if you're interested -

                    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:samrog131/ppa

                    sudo apt-get update

                    sudo apt-get install kwin-style-smaragd

Then, install your emerald theme (it goes in ~/.emerald/theme) and from systemsettings --> workspace appearance --> window decorations, select smaragd as yout theme. Your emerald theme will run just fine.
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

Bob: "Why are you banging your head?"

The reason it's typical for people on forums to ask why in response to an unusual question is often twofold:
                        • someone is attempting to do something that's possibly beyond their skills and we don't yet know enough about that particular individual
                        • many of us regulars are curious people and always interested in learning new tricks that others discover and wouldn't mind sharing

Please don't leap to the conclusion that we think you're an example of the first item. In your initial post, you mentioned Emerald, so it was natural for us to assume you're looking to replicate some element of its behavior. Later, you wrote:

Well, you didn't answer the question; instead, you restated your problem:

But back to compiz-fusion. I, for one, know little about it. I'd be very interested to learn why you like it, because I might like it for the same reasons. This forum exists precisely to exchange such information. For example, what keyboard and mouse combinations attract you? Do they accelerate your workflow? You might possess a bit of knowledge that many of here could benefit from.

I'm pretty impressed with KWin. But I have longer experience with Compiz and I do think there are a few areas where it has better developed capabilities.

                          Such as:

Ability to combine mouse buttons with modifier keys - e.g. Super-Button4/Button5 for Zoom in/out (as you know, Super = Meta = Winkey = Mod4 depending on which program you're talking to)

Ability to combine mouse buttons and/or modifier keys with screen edge actions (so Button4, mouse wheel up, would do something different at a screen edge from just moving the mouse there)

There are some others but I'm not sure if KWin doesn't support them or if I just haven't found the technique yet.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

                            SteveRiley.
You said you "would like to know more about it(Compiz-fusion).

Do you mean the coding and back end stuff?

                            or

What it does to enhance the desktop experience? Like I could flip between three faces, one face with an online student's answers to questions(with the correct answers under/overlaid and mostly transparent so that i could scan both at the same time. The second face with the college's "intranet thing" to where I could place correct answers and then send them to the student. The third face with the gradebook. And all I did was superkey+(can't remember what" and drag the mouse to rotate the cube.

                            or

Do you mean more about how it was/is enabled on the desktop? An example being that there used to be a lot of stuff that had to be installed seperately, including Emerald, to get it to work properly.

As an example of item two above and a difference, one uses the scroll wheel to rotate the cube in Kwin, and if the graphics card is not sufficiently high end, then one often gets the effect of the faces rushing by in a blur and landing either randomly on a face or on the original face. The keystroke/mouse drag to rotate took a second or so longer but gave more precision in the movement with a smaller graphics card. And, a faster card will provide sufficient precision in Kwin to rotate the cube precisely using the scroll wheel.

Depending upon which of the above you desire information; the answers can be non-existent to covering a whole seperate thread.

In the interests of completeness, woodsmoke I think some of your points are possible with KWin too:

I don't think you meant this as a differentiator? This would be true of any window manager supporting virtual desktops, I suppose.

You can do this in two steps (not a lot more finger movements) in KWin: first go to desktop cube mode (the default keystroke is ... Ctrl-F11, but I changed that pretty quickly) and then click and drag with the mouse to rotate precisely (or use the mouse wheel to rotate a whole face at a time).
