Help with kspread 2.3.3

Can someone please tell me how to insert a chart in to a spreadsheet using this package. According to the kspread handbook once you have highlighted the data you want in the chart you then select the insert menu and then chart, however, following these instructions no chart option exists in the insert menu.

Good question. Now that you mention it, i have not found a way to do it and I have installed the kchart component.

I think kchart (as a standalone application/plugin) has been deprecated (at least on precise kchart package doesn't have "anything" in it).

I recall charting functionality is supposed to be available as a "shape" in ko2, but I haven't found it (although I haven't really looked for it either).

http://userbase.kde.org/KChart:
From v.2.3.1 KChart is no longer a stand-alone application. It now appears as the koffice-chart-shape within applications
The Ubuntu (and the Debian) are not packing the KChart apps:
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changel...ntu6/changelog
* Not including KChart application but rather the chart shape plugin.
...
* Added 10_nokcharpart to avoid installing unwanted desktop files.
The KChart is now an empty package: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ce/+bug/761380

Maybe the chart shape plugin should be in Add Shape menu.

But i can't find it.

--- Edit ---
http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2011/12/14...tu-devel.html:
who_me guys, any reason why chart shape plugin are not packaged with the koffice suite. It does kinda render the spreadsheet app half-useless 17:07

who_me hmm missed a question mark there :/ 17:07

Riddell I don't know but we don't work on koffice much now, calligra is where our efforts are 17:20

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

Hi

Although I used Kspread just this last few days to upload and download grades from the college I had no requirement to make a chart so was not aware of the situation.

However, to confirm the situation and offer a possible workaround I did the following:

Using Spread 2.3.3 I could not create a chart within Kspread itself.

Using Spread 2.3.3 I could not create a chart in another program, such as LibreOffice spreadsheet and directly copy and paste it into Kspread.

Just for the halibut I attempted to copy and past into a LibreOffice word document and a Koffice word document and that did not happen.

I then opened Krita and was able to past the chart made in LibreOffice spread into it. I then saved as a .png.

Then I use the image insert function in Kspread to insert the image.

Following OneLine's post I inserted koffice-shape with the following menu items: settings/dockers/add shape.

However, although I could "create a table" I could do nothing with it except move it.

I then opened Kword and made a "table" but was not able to make a "chart" from it.

So, it looks as if, at present, one will have to make and complete a chart in another application, such as LibreOffice spread, make copy of it and past it into Krita and then copy and paste that into Kspread as an image.

Which, rather defeats the purpose of using Kspread to make a chart, one might as well just use LibreOffice sreadsheet.

I'll look around and see if I can find more info to go along with OneLine's post and also fiddle with other chart apps etc.

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

Hi
please read my post, immediately above, to confirm that kchart is not in kspread.

it is, however, installed on my system, but it will not run from terminal.

Here are two salient links:

[http://userbase.kde.org/KChart]kchart is not a standalone application but is a shape

[https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/761380] the package is "missing" is a "bug" as of 12/09/2011

so, I guess things are just stuck in limbo until the devs do something about it.

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

Packaging mishap ?

Looking the OpenSuse KOffice2 packages and what they have inside. Searching the missing libraries from the Ubuntu Packages (http://packages.ubuntu.com/) -> koffice-dev.

koffice-dev:
Description: common libraries for KOffice (development files)
This package provides the development files for the libraries that are
shared amongst the various components of KOffice.
.
This package is part of the KDE Office Suite.
Homepage: http://www.koffice.org/

Installing the KOffice development package and there are the insert/edit chart buttons.

The KOffice is not stable, at here, but that is another story...

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

I have just tried to download a copy of Koffice 2.3.3 from the official website to see if, once installed, all the functions were available. On the download page no link to download latest release 2.3.3 so I've given up on Koffice.

As KDE runs a little slow on my mini tower pc I'm planning on replacing Kubuntu with either Xubuntu or Lubuntu when 12.04 is released so no point in starting to use Koffice when I'll be using Abiword and Gnumeric as main office apps.

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

Hi
I added the development files and Kspread did, indeed, produce a chart.

However, when I tried to "save as" I was able to enter a title but when I clicked save (as ods) Kspread crashed with this deteail:

Executable: kspread PID: 8390 Signal: Segmentation fault (11)

There was, in the documents folder a file with the extension ".new" but it would not open.

This was the output of the error message when I tried to open that file:

Could not open /home/woodsmoke/Documents/kubuntu test of chart in spreadsheet.odscM8390.new
Reason: Not a valid KOffice file: /home/woodsmoke/Documents/kubuntu test of chart in spreadsheet.odscM8390.new

I then made a spreadsheet and did NOT try to make a chart and it saved as normal.

so, possibly a "bug" in the charting function.

Re: Help with kspread 2.3.3

I have had many updates and have tested the chart function each day since the last post.

The chart function still causes the application to not "crash" but just "disappear".

i checked KDE bugs because it was posted that the situation was reported as a bug.

There was one confirmation and then some discussion of the differences between 2.2 and 2.3 and then it was stated that this was considered fixed.

Since I am running 2.3.3 and still have it I reported it as a bug.

However, that awaits "moderation" to determine if it is really a bug and whether my report should be listed.

So we can only wait to see what happens over there.
