    Minecraft shortcut?

    Hello!
I recently installed one of my favorite games minecraft :P
If I run this command in the terminal

    Code:
    java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
the game works fine. Very well in fact, I think it runs better than on windows

Anyway opening up the terminal and typing that in every time I wanna play is kinda tedious.
I was wondering if and how I could make a shortcut for terminal commands? (Much like how you could create command-prompt shortcuts in windows by renaming the file to .bat)

In the menu item "Command" text box enter:
    Code:
    java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
Check the "Enable Launch Feedback" and on the Advanced Tab "Work Path" put the path to your Minecraft installation. Mine is /home/jerry/Minecraft
Pull an icon off the web page or a stock one you prefer.

Right click on the K-Gear in the lower right corner (it's called "Start" in XP) and select "Edit the Menu".
In the structure of the menu locate where you want to put the menu directory under which for Minecraft. I chose "Games". With "Games" highlighted, click on the "Create Menu Item" icon, and proceed. Don't forget to click the "Save" icon when you are finished.

          Thank you
But it doesn't work :/ I placed it right next to mahjongg under board games, but it doesn't show up.

Oh wait, that's not a terminal command line, that's a directory.
Sorry but running minecraft without those special commands (i.e. -xmx1024 increases RAM for minecraft) makes the game go black right after I start.
Thank you for your help though

            ....
Of course. The "special commands" (actually parameters to the jar command) are included in the menu command box:
            Code:
            java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
as I wrote in my first response.

I call Minecraft from my menu using that command and it works very well.

              Hi

This is merely a report for people who may be reading the thread.

I have never played "Minecraft" and have watched this thread so I decided to see if I could install it.

It is not in the standard repos for the latest tweaked Kubuntu.

So i got it from this website:

              http://devio.us/~clorow/minecraft_deb.cgi

It installed very simply, and provided a link in the games submenu item which provided an initial interface somewhat similar to this when started:

Apparently, there is something wrong with the site hosting the below image, if it isn't fixed in a reasonably short time, I'll change linkys or delete it.

                And, FUN to play!!!
There are lots of good video tutorials explaining how to survive your first day!

I haven't run it in multi-player mode yet, but if you happen to play with it over your xmas vacation period shoot me an email. Perhaps we can try it out and team up on the Zombies, Creepers and Skeletons!

Thanks for all your replies guys!
Sorry I've been busy the past day, but I got the shortcut working.

Ok so I used woodsmoke's link and everything seems to work fine now (I'm using /usr/share/applications/minecraft.desktop as the destination).

GreyGeek, I understand now what you wanted me to do but unfortunately I dont know where the installation folder is :/
Is it the place I put "minecraft.jar" in or is it the place minecraft installs itself on the computer?
Oh and when I tried using Workpath as the path my minecraft.jar was located, no item was displayed in the menu.
Thank you for all your help, too bad I couldn't get it to work.

Edit: LOL I just found out the .minecraft folder is acutally hidden in the home folder ^^
Now I can install texture packs and stuff.

                        Re: Minecraft shortcut?

Glad you got it worked out!

I've found that if I create a "creative" world I can play with unlimited resources, life, and no threats. Just exploring is fun. It give a great opportunity to learn how best to use the tools, make stuff, put on armor, fight bad things, create fortresses both above and below ground, etc.

Then, when you create your first world with actual threats and you must hunt and gather resources, it gets interesting. I have yet to play the game on "Hard". Also, to make a bow and arrows, the best weapon because it is long distance, one must accumulate feathers by killing chickens, gather flint by digging gravel, and make sticks by chopping wood, converting it into planks and converting the planks into sticks. Then one can make arrows on the tool bench by placing a flint on a stick and a feather at the bottom of the stick. When you fire an arrow be sure to recover it if you can. Oh, cook the chicken for food. To make a bow one needs three sticks and three strings. The strings come from killing spiders. Spiders are AGGRESSIVE. They are 1 block tall but TWO blocks wide, so lure them to a wall with a one block square hole in it and hit them with a sword until they die. Bust through the wall to pick up the string.

One last piece of advice. If you die in a game you loose everything in your personal inventory and are restored at the point you appeared when you first created the game. . But, you can create storage containers and store digging tools, torches, arrows, iron ignots, etc. near the creation point and in your various fortresses. I usually build a fortress around my creation point so when I am restored I am already in a secure location with resources, which inlcude swords, picks, shovels, armor and food.

GG you REALLY have my attention with this:

By and large I seldom play RPGs because I can never get past the first level. I wish that all of them had this feature and I would probably buy .....all ...of them, because, as you said, I enjoy exploring.

If you would please expand on how to create the "creative" world I would do that since the semester is winding down and I would have the time.

On main menu (after you've logged in) press Single Player.
                            Then Create New World
Then click on "Game Mode: X" until it says Creative, then Create New World.

                            Simple as that

                              Re: Minecraft shortcut?

                              What Mossmyr said!

Also, there is an option you can fill in called "generation seed" (or something like that, I don't remember exactly). You can put any number or phrase in that and create specific worlds. An example of 5 seeds is here. The most interesting are the last two.
Examples of three more seeds are here. The firs, archespore, is awesome. Youtube shows examples of other seeds.

Also, in the Creative mode you can fly. Just double tap on the space bar to launch. Hold the space bar to rise higher. To drop down double tap the space bar again. Falling to the ground won't hurt you in creative mode. If you play in creative mode you can set the difficult to peaceful (no dangers), easy, hard, etc. All but the peaceful mode will have creatures which attack and can kill. If you fly up out of their range and then use the bow and arrow you can practice killing them to learn what it takes. Or you can stay on the ground and duke it out. They can't kill you in the creative mode, and you can't run out of supplies.

There is an app that runs in Kubuntu nicely. It is called Minutor. A video demo is here! You can download it from here. It's a deb package and after installation is run merely by putting "minutor" in the menu item command line. It is a mapping tool which shows you what is under ground in your worlds.

Or, instead of Minutor, use AMIDST from here. As a jar file it is run using
                              Code:
                              java -noverify -jar AMIDST.jar
I haven't used it but I may play with it just to see exactly what it maps.
