Only works for image files though; duh, who would want a text file as a background :-D.

I tried that - one of the first things I tried.

    Result - it doesn't work.
I have my desktop set up as Folder View - Desktop folder.

One thing I did notice is that you have to have some icons on the desktop first before it will work. For some reason, I can't even drag and drop a shortcut from the k menu until I have some icons already on the desktop.

So, what I do, is just right click and create an empty folder and then delete it. Once I do that, I can drag and drop shortcuts and images as described.

I haven't used the default Desktop view in a while, but just tried it and it does indeed work for me.

Try creating some desktop icons first and try again. If it doesn't work, I would fill out a bug report.

Quite honestly, I should fill out a bug report for having to create other desktop icons first before I can drag stuff to the desktop, but its such a small task, and filling out the bug report would consume much more time, I just don't worry about it .

    Hope this works for ya!

Could you define a) decent b) kubuntu *specific* ?

The Kubuntu Forums has the Artwork board: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?board=30.0

and when searching with the "kubuntu site:kde-look.org" there are lot of hits.
        Have you tried ?

Well 'kubuntu specific' means I like it to be obvious from the wallpaper which system is running, with half a dozen distros on this machine it's helpful sometimes to remind me which one I'm actually using!

And "decent" means something a bit different to the usual collection of cog wheels and "K" symbols", with limited range of tone and density so that icons on the desktop aren't lost in the noise of the background (I hate these Manga wallpapers).

And the trouble with trawling through kde-look and so on is that they are awash with stuff labeled "look at this, it's my first go and only took me ten minutes with GIMP (or whatever)", I was hoping for something a bit more professional looking.
