I give up.

I have read through the KDE documentation and couldn't find a clue on how to do this.

I have been through every icon in "System Settings" and couldn't find anything either.

I want to change the desktop wallpaper.

How do I do it?

I could do it quite simply on previous version of Kubuntu, but it would seem that the developers have hidden the means to do so so ingeniously that I cannot find it.

I thought that changing the "Theme" was what I wanted, but after trying that, I found that it wasn't.

Unfortunately the KDE documentation hasn't caught up with the current Kubuntu and so leaves much unanswered.

Right-click the desktop background. In the menu, choose Desktop Settings. In the dialog box that appears, ensure that the dropdown next to Wallpaper: is Image. Click the Open button at the bottom. Navigate to your favorite picture.

Right clicking the desktop brings up a menu, but it does not include any "Desktop Settings" option.

The top option is "Create New", then "Undo" then "paste Clipboard Contents" followed by several more options, none of which is "Desktop Settings".

Is my copy of 11.10 and KDE screwed up somehow?

Not messed up. Sounds like you might be running the Desktop Icons activity. In the right-click menu, do you see Folder View Settings or any item with "settings" in it?

Regardless of which activity you're running, you can also press [Alt]+D followed by [Alt]+S as the keyboard shortcut to open the view settings dialog, which is where you set wallpaper.

No, you're not clicking on the desktop. If you click on a Folder View widget, you get the options you've listed. If you have "Folder View" set as your desktop activity, the last option will be "Folder Settings." You can change the folder view wallpaper there or change to Desktop View for a different set of options.

BTW -you have to Unlock Widgets to change your desktop type (from folder to desktop view).

NOTE - If you follow Steve's tip - you need to be sure NOT release the ALT between the D and S strokes.

Okay - I stumbled on the method to change the "Desktop Icon Activity" to "New Activity". I can now switch back and forth between the two. Still don't know what each is supposed to do though.

I think "New Activity" was the default I had when I installed, but that I switched to the Desktop Icon activity when I was trying to understand what those red/green/blue buttons on the panel were for. At the time, both desktops were probably identical and so I didn't see any effect when clicking on the various options.

Now to learn what each is supposed to do for me.

As a side note...

You can also drag any picture to the desktop and the context menu that comes up will give you the option to copy/move... And, set the image as wallpaper .

Only works for image files though; duh, who would want a text file as a background :-D.

hmmmm that got me to thinking, a BAD THING!!

a) what about a set of "first instructions" about a distro
b) what about the answers to an exam that I am grading
c) all of the commands to do things the "Linuxy way"!
d) playing a joke on another user that the computer has crashed and the person has to IMMEDIATLY manually shut down the computer!

HAHA, back in the day, we used to take a screen shot of someones desktop, then delete all their icons and make the screen shot the background... They would sit there and click on those icons for 20 min before calling IT :-D

I tried that - one of the first things I tried.

Result - it doesn't work.
