XRender vs openGL dual monitor with different resolution

I just switched to KDE from regular Ubuntu basically because can't get along with Unity.

Only one thing is causing me a head ache, if I want to have my dual monitors, which have different resolutions work at their optimum resolution, I have to switch SystemSettings->DesktopEffects->Advanced to XRender. The issue with this fix is that the desktop slows considerably when dragging and dropping.

I started out with the default configuration formt he Kubuntu install which is SystemSettings->DesktopEffects->Advanced set to OpenGL, here the drag drop works smoothly but I have to set both monitors to the resolution of the smallest monitor (1024,768)

I have a ATI 9600 Pro on a Dell Dimension 8300, being new to KDE I would like to know if this is a known issue with KDE, or am I missing something that I could fix if I dig deep enough.

Here ATI 9600 XT, OpenGL is working with the dual monitors.

System Settings > Display and Monitor > Size & Orientation.

    VGA 1024x768, top
    DVI 1680x1050, bottom

The screens are working as different virtual desktops (1) with the "Different widgets for each desktop" setting on. Different plasma widgets, (background images etc).

    (1) Well - they are real desktops

Great, it looks possible then :-)
Does anyone know what I am missing ?
All I do is select openGL vs XRender and both screens are filed with garbage blocks unless the resolutions match.

Hardware/driver/something limit with the OpenGL ?

If i try put the desktops side by side (1680x1050 + 1024x768) then there is a garbled screen:

        The 1680x1050 + 800x600, 1400x1050 + 1024x768, etc. are working. Also the above/below stacking is working.

...When I initially switched, I had a card (an old Radeon 92xx series card,
r2xx chip) that was hardware limited to a 2048 px square for opengl,
while I run dual monitors, stacked, for 1920x2160 (that's my current
setup, dual 16:9 1920x1080, 1080p HDTV, at the time it was dual 4:3
1600x1200 CRTs, for 1600x2400, but the problem was the same, one
dimension > 2048). Thus, I was limited to xrender -- no choice for
        OpenGL...

        Here

Here the OpenGL in snappier but with it there is the resolution limit. The XRender is slow and many desktop effects are not working, but there seems to be no resolution limit.
