I managed to get past the "fail to fetch..." problem by changing the Akondi settings for local folder to my old mail location.
But now I have two accounts for receiving mail. One for Local Folders and one for Google mail. Also everytime I start up Kmail it spends a very long time "retrieving folder contents" and my google mail account continues to grow and grow in size.
