    Wine 1.3 spams file associations

Hello. My first post to the forum and it's a complaint.

Twice now I've had no alternative but to quickly shut down my PC and all I did was click a file in Dolphin. The first was a .html I wanted to read. The task manager panel quickly filled with entries which were rapidly squashed together. I Presumed my computer would explode if I left it going. I quickly saved my work and shut down. I blamed rekonq, presuming it was the default browser, but when I looked at file associations I found the culprit was winebrowser.

I had installed wine 1.3.0+1 by the Muon package manager, but didn't expect it to set up file associations to its broken (on my system) browser. Stupidly didn't check for other associations and the same just happened when I clicked to open an .xml file.

Here's a list of other file types affected:

    atom+xml
    docbook+xml
    mathml+xml
    rdf+xml
    relaxng
    rss+xml
    sieve
    smil
    vnd.google-earth.kml+xml (2nd entry)
    vnd.mozilla.xul+xml
    vnd.oasis.opendocument.graphics-flat-xml (2nd entry)
    vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation-flat-xml (2nd entry)
    vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet-flat-xml (2nd entry)
    vnd.oasis.opendocument.text-flat-xml (2nd entry)
    x-abiword
    x-designer
    x-dia-diagram
    x-dia-shape
    x-fictionbook+xml (2nd entry)
    x-glade
    x-java-jnlp-file (2nd entry)
    x-kgetlist
    x-ktesnippets (2nd entry)
    x-kvtml
    x-nzb
    x-xbel
    x-xliff
    xml
    xml-external-parsed-entity
    xsd
    xslt+xml
    xspf+xml (2nd entry after VLC)

There are also some "wine Internet Explorer" secondary associations in the 'image section.

    Text section:

    vnd.trolltech.linguist
    vnd.wap.wml
    x-opml+xml
    x-xmi
    x-xslfo

A (non) emulator shouldn't change the user's file associations even if they think their browser is best...

Kubuntu 11.10 is absolutely brilliant though.

Re: Wine 1.3 spams file associations

I haven't had this problem, but I would like to mention that Wine from the Ubuntu repository is always behind. It has the same frozen versioning as everything else.

You may consider using the Wine PPA to get the current release. They make releases every 2 weeks where Ubuntu updates every 6 months.

    PPA is here. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine

You can update to the latest wine by adding the PPA.

    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

Then update the wine1.3 packages you have installed with

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.
