I switched to Kubuntu over a year ago. No prob so far. But now I am finding that Muon seriously, ehm, sucks... Can someone explain why e.g. I cannot even find Skype in the Muon package manager, why I see it in the software centre, install it and it does nothing (only 2.9 MB were downloaded) and why good old 'apt-get install skype' just plain works

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
My suspicion is that there's an error of some kind the Skype package. I mention this briefly in a paragraph in one of my posts in the "aptitude vs. muon" thread.

"Just in case" there actually is an issue in Muon and its Software Center, I've mailed the developer.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I removed the version of Skype that I had installed from the repositories, and downloaded a more recent version from the Skype site, ie skype-ubuntu_2.2.0.35-1_amd64.deb. I just clicked on this file and it initiated the installation of dependencies and then stopped. I then restarted this process and it then installed Skype.
Another "feature" of muon is that if you change any of its preferences, they only become active when muon is relaunched.
There is yet another "feature" that I encountered this morning. For some time now I have been waiting for Avidemux which allows editing of video files. I searched for it on muon without success but when I used Synaptic it was there and I installed it and did a quick successful test of it. When I was checking on the first point regarding 32B files not being listed I found the Avidemux was available. So, to me, it looks like muon does its own package update independently of apt-get.
After these experiences, I tend to stay with Synaptic and only check out muon when another update comes along.

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
Thanks all for answering. So it's not me then. The 64 vs 32 bit issue is what is happening to me probably as well, since I run 64 bits.
Too bad that the Kubuntu devs decided to force Muon on to their users with obvious bugs being present.
I must say that 11.10 is giving me all kinds of weird problems. No flash sound on my wife's laptop, sound hangup on mine (bye bye pulseaudio once again), Muon issues, strange network response problems in the browser... Mmmmm....

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
I must say that I am surprised that you are having so much trouble with 11.10. I have added the software sources and the other software repositories that I have on my system. With Pulse Audio, I hope you have used System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon to set the order in which the Playback and Recording devices are selected. The mixer settings on the volume control can be accessed to make sure that nothing is muted.

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
No problems here with muon. But I do rely mostly on synaptic because of familiarity.
And 11.10 is nearly problem free. I am running the 32 bit version.Linux because it works. No social or political motives in my decision to use it.

I think that Muon is a very good project, but still lacks development. Some packages are marked as installed when not and vice-versa. Besides, it'll be better when we could write reviews too. I also think it should be integrated with Apper.
For the audio, after the 11.10 upgrade I've got this message saying that KDE detected that components may have been removed. What should I do? I'm having issues with mic sound on Jitsi (people say it's muted), but I've already checked alsamixer and it's not, and I've tested it on a webpage and it's working. Maybe this is related somehow?

In times past when I had trouble with PulseAudio I found that the package pavucontrol provided a way to correct problems. I will be interested to know if this package helps solve your problem.

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
In the end I completely reinstalled 11.10 from scratch on my wife's laptop. Sound seems to work now. However, I find it odd that it didn't after the upgrade.
I had to install twice. The 1st time the installer bailed out with an error message that not all installed packages could be upgraded, and it failed to susbsequently boot.
Muon is buggy. Package updates go very slow, or fails and not all packages are shown. So I've installed Synaptic for now.
My own machine is still having network issues, in that it sometimes stutters when opening web sites, forcing me to reload.
I am glad 11.10 works OK for others, but it does not have me jazzed....

Re: is Muon seriously retarded??
With my laptop I have usb speakers which I have put as the preferred output device. When these are not plugged in, I used to get the message about removing them. I now have disabled this message so that I do not get it any more. I your case I would not let KDE remove the device and try to see what pavucontol finds. I hope you have success.
