[solved] Dolphin is painfully slow after upgrade to oneiric - It's the Cd drive

Since uploading to oneiric dolphin has slowed down so It's almost impossible to use.

can someone give me some ideas as to why this may be happening?

And the solution is ;- take the Cd out of the drive. Some cds with a large number of tracks (99 in my case and another similarly noted) and dolphin slows to a crawl.

Maybe sharing what is slowing down would help determine the issue? I find it quite responsive on my machine...

Are other KDE apps like Kaffeine and Ktorrent also slow?

If so, you probably have the same problem as I had. Try deleting (after making a backup, of course) the .kde4 directory and the .kderc file in your home directory, then reboot.

Actually you are right kaffeine starts slowly and navigating folders is slow.

The original issue is the dolphin is very slow when opening the first folder and also opening any other folders. My music folder on another machine is sloooowwwww.

have you tried disableing desktop effects? if they are slow all of KDE will be slow...

i've tried deleting .kde and no improvement.

The graphics card is nvidia GT 7600 so is old but not crippling. Dolphin was fine before oneiric.

just trying to renaming .kde and reboot and then deleting the new .kde and then restoring the original .kde is painful.

with out starting the flame war lets just say if its an nVidia card , expect breakage, have you tried to disable desktop effects yet?

Probably the slowness problem is not directly caused by a video issue, if the graphics look OK. More likely it is something about the filesystem or other competing processes.

I've just tried disabling desktop effects and had no improvement. I have checked and I am on the recommended additional 3d graphics driver.

I didn't post quickly because with dolphin croaked everything takes ages.

I tried konquorer which browses my computer quickly.

wow your load avg is way high! 1.02. ...how does top look with dolphin running? can you pin it as the process eating all you cpu?

Do you have a CD in your optical drive by chance? I once had Dolphin acting stupidly slow, and it turns out it was having a hard time with the CD in my drive, for whatever reason.
