I tried automatic upgrading on 11.04 in VMware - that upgrading reminder pops up from time to time and I clicked to proceed upgrading. Everything ran smoothly until the install step - it hangs up. It took me over 3 hours in the package downloading step and all wasted - I had to deleted the snapshot and restored system from the previous snapshot.
I also tried the CD/DVD approach by downloading the CD and DVD images and burned CD and DVD (both regualr CD and alternative CD), but the install in the alternative CD just can't find the CD drive since the CD/DVD was burned in Windows OS and as a result they have CD file names with spaces that Linux can't read while the regular CD doesn't even have the install option on the menu when booted.
I seemingly remember in previous years there're install/upgrade option on the menu when the CD/DVD booted in the VMware and it just one click going through the upgrading process.
