What is (initial/default) login+password of livecd?

    I downloaded the Kubuntu (Live)CD

    kubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso

and started my computer with it.

After booting I am prompted for login name and passwd.
    I tried

    root/root
    and
    kubuntu/kubuntu
    but it didn't work.

What is the initial login+passwd otherwise?

I don't think it should ask one (it should boot straight onto the desktop)...so there might be some issue with it, but you can try username "ubuntu" and a blank password (no password), IIRC

If the live CD gives you a text mode screen it is failing to initialize X. I'd be very careful with the upgrade because that means the likelyhood of X not working is quite high as part of the install is quite high.

How much RAM do you have in your PC? What might be happening is the xserver can't start do to insufficient RAM (a Kubuntu LiveCD is designed to run with the xserver started/running), resulting in 'odd' behavior -- asking for a login and password??
