Freezes after latest updates

Both my wife's and my own laptop freeze up spontaneously after having applied the latest security updates. Keyboard and mouse become unresponsive. I accidentalle found out that unplugging the power chord and plugging it back in re-enabled input devices. Very annoying! Anyone else has the same?

BTW: two different machines: Acer and Thinkpad, both 64 bits.

I also have encountered this with a laptop (Dell) and with my desktop. My situation might be a bit different since I installed Ubuntu 11.10 X64 first and then installed Kubuntu on-top of it..

I've had the 'no mouse/touchpad' after the first update following a clean install of Kubuntu 11.10 on two machines, First noticed it on a P4 Dell Latitude C840, and a P3 Toughbook CF-28, it has been running 11.04 a dream, gonna try the power lead thing (see OP) before returning to that hard drive.
