What's wrong with Libre Office? Also, have you tried Calligra? http://www.kubuntu.org/news/calligra-2.3.86

I hear Calligra is pretty solid, save an annoying issue in Words, which after the recent sprint is likely fixed.

I am v happy with LibreOffice Calc. It rarely makes me swear. And Writer, even less often.

Little experience of KOffice or GNOME Office (I presume gnumeric is part of some kind of gnome office suite?).
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

KOffice (more specifically, KWord) is maintained by one individual. The consensus is that the future of KDE's Office Suite rests with Calligra, as many of the KOffice Devs made the switch. The assumption is that Calligra will be ready for prime time in time for 12.10. If I were looking for a KDE-centric office suite, Calligra is where I would spend my time.

In fact, I downloaded it today, along with the debug packages, and will spend some time sipping coffee and summarily trying to break it. Wish me luck!

I eagerly await your breakage reports!

First test: figure out how to get Calligra Words to create bulleted lists that don't indent a full inch. Do this with as few clicks as possible.

I prefer OpenOffice to LibreOffice. Just works better for me.

Sorry to hear that but, be it as it may, Libre Calc is good. Certainly, the task at hand and your preference chooses the tool.

I want to apologize to the community for my untoward comments.

The problem was not Koffice per-se or LO perse but that I was in a "position" in which I could demonstrate the viability of either/or of the suites for a certain group of people, who trust(ed) me, and still do, about "open source".

However, in what was just a plain vanilla situation, which I had carried out hundreds of times, both Koffice, and LO strangled on simple formatting.

I had done, basically, the same thing for over a year and people had been "watching" what I was doing and they felt that possibly either KO or LO were sufficiently mature to be able to step up to the mark.

This was NOT a "situation with Microsoft", and as I said above, it did not seem to be a "big deal" in terms of the capabilities of either suite, so I was given an opportunity to do a "demonstration" and had to use a Microsoft app to retrieve the "situation". My "reputation" is not lowered with these people, they realized that the situation was, to all "appearances" a "fluke", but once bitten twice burned.

And, I don't EVEN want to hear the mantra "use at your own risk".

Because of that I will not be able to use any of the Linux office suites for any kind of even remotely serious work.

The above, after the announcement that Koffice is basically dead, and from what I have seen of Calligra one would probably be well positioned to expect a similar announcement from "whoever" is developing it.

Given that even the "diehards" here at the forum don't even use Kontact, and the simple fact that Google doesn't seem to WANT to "completely" interact with Akonadi/mySql; I fully expect that a similar announcement, or just allowing it to "die on the vine" will occur with Kontact,...

and it was just all a "bit much".

                          Basically, then, my function in terms of "testing" applications is of little use, for two reasons;

                          a) there are no apps to "test" in terms of a "forum", my testing was, basically, constant "fiddling" with them, and

                          b) I have "volunteered" dozens of times to do "formal" testing, in terms of testing against criteria produced by the devs( I mean this is not rocket science folks, and has been done for over twenty years), and have been roundly ignored by one and all, ....

And, my other thing that I could, personally, do was testing "hardware" and given that just about any distro will run on just about any machine, given that it is not too exotic and bleeding edge....that is of little or no use to anyone.

Then I have little function except as a) Kibbitzer b) continuing the story in my blog c) making wallpapers.

Since the point of my story and the wallpapers was the furtherance of "Kubuntu", not "applications" then with the good graces of the admins I will pop in periodically to do such.

Again, my apologies to the forum members, the administrators, and the fine fellow that PMd me a few weeks ago....he knows who he is!

But you are prepared to use MS Office for serious work? Only slightly tongue in cheek: the only reason I'm comfortable using word or excel is ... OK two reasons ... I have invested a lot of time over many years fighting with the idiosyncrasies and learning how they are supposed to be used (and then learning where they hid those essential features in each new release) ... but mainly because it's not my decision. If an Ms Office product blows up in my face, customers and bosses and colleagues almost never blame me for choosing something so ****ty, they commiserate.

Still - I wholly accept any cursing justifiably directed at any Linux office suite. I have in fact cursed a bit at LibreOffice Calc.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.
