    No PulseAudio?

    HP dv4 - Intel

I've noticed that PulseAudio was removed after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. Sound is working fine in most apps - except in Kdenlive - but I miss the Veromix volume controls.

The metapackage /1/ kubuntu-desktop /2/ is recommending the pulseaudio, pulseaudio-module-bluetooth.

Do you have the package kubuntu-desktop installed ?

Veromix is in the Ubuntu repositories from the 11.10 onwards. Package name is plasma-widget-veromix /3/.

Thanks for the quick and comprehensive reply, OneLine.

I'm not an expert - just an interested and average user - and didn't know about metapackages. Very interesting and useful.

Yes - kubuntu-desktop is installed, as well as pulseaudio (along with many other related packages). However, when I inspect the system activity, I see that pulseaudio isn't running. Regarding Veromix, I added it to the system tray but the devices list is empty...

      Thanks again.

It should start automatically with the /etc/xdg/autostart/.

Does the pulseaudio start if you try from the konsole with the command /1/,/2/:
        Code:
        pulseaudio --start
        or
        Code:
        pulseaudio -D
        Are there error messages ?

By the KDE PulseAudio Integration /3/:
If you need to restart PulseAudio, generally a reboot is simplest. Alternatively, issue the commands: pulseaudio -k; start-pulseaudio-x11; start-pulseaudio-kde. The first command will kill the running daemon, then the second two start PulseAudio and load some additional modules that are normally loaded as part of your typical login procedure. Please note that some applications may require to be restarted after restarting PulseAudio.

        1. man pulseaudio

Thanks for the detailed instructions. However, since I'm not an expert at all, I'm afraid to brake something in a system that's working fine. Is PulseAudio necessary, besides for controlling the sound volumes of several apps independently?

At here it is not. The bare alsa /1/ works just as well or poorly as the pulse.

Some applications may need some configuration...

They are as default using the pulse.

Thank you very much for the comprehensive support. I'll study this subject a little deeper before advancing in changing a system that's working fine. I'll return to this topic ASAP.

              Thanks again and best regards.
