    Installed but not working great

    SOLVED

    Hi

I have installed Kubuntu on my laptop, its an old dell M60 precision 1.7ghz centrino processor, 2gb ram and a Geforce FX go 700 128mb graphics card.

Its not gone to well :-(, i followed all the instructions and installed kubuntu from a usb stick, and checked the iso hash number thing which is all ok.

When i boot up and log on in default mode the screen is black

When I log on into the failsafe option i get some functionality, it wants to update eleventy things so i set it going doing that but it hangs at 55 percent done on something called dpkg

how do i check what updates didnt happen?

    any help greatly appriciated :-)

you probably nead a beter driver for that vid card.............but first we nead to fix the update problem.

boot back to falesafe and in a terminal run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
this will update the LIST of avalabel packages .

    do you get errors ?
    if no then do
    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
it will list what it's going to upgrade probably a lot hit y and enter and it will upgrade the stuff it listed

if eather gives an error post it hear OR if the error sugjests to run apt-get -f install then do it with sudo "sudo apt-get -f install"

Cheers Vinny, done all that and got no errors, still only works in failsafe mode.

Having never installed graphics drivers in linux I am not sure how to do this or which one to download as my card is so old, do you have any tips?

go to Kickoff(the blue K bottom left ) >Applications>System>additional drivers and see if it lists anything for you first.
